We want you to know just how hard we have worked to make these treasured releases SPECIAL for fans who have waited and waited and waited for these three albums to receive the care and treatment that COLLECTORS CRAVE!  We have tried our best to give you the very best reissues on the planet.

As the owner of Retroactive Records, I recall putting Brow Beat - Unplugged Alternative in my CD player, not knowing exactly what Brow Beat was or what to expect. I just knew I loved all the artists. I could never have anticipated just how much I would love that unique compilation. I listened to it over and over and over again for many years. That album made a distinct imprint of brokenness, healing, despair and hopefulness on my heart and soul that I carry with me to this day like it's a badge of honor.

Later, I would come across another gem, Alternative Worship - Prayer, Petitions & Praise. It received very little promotion and could easily be missed if you didn't know who was on it or that it existed. I am certain music fans passed by it, assuming it was part of the mindless gut of corporate worship music releases at the time. But Alternative Worship was just that - an alternative to the cookie-cutter worship music we knew. It was an alternative to the theologically and artistically stagnant worship scene we were trying to escape. The fact that the album was an offering and outpouring from Michael Knott, Terry Taylor, and Gene Eugene only made it more essential that fans find this under-the-radar bit of brilliance.  The music is powerful and the lyrics will wiggle into your DNA.

I was excited to see a second Browbeats album released in 1998 - Wither Wing. I wondered if it would be able to touch the brilliance of the first one. To be honest, the first track shocked me with the hard edged, guitar-ripping rap rock from Ted Cookerly of EDL. It sent the message that this album was different.  So I opened my mind to what it had to say and offer.  The all-star cast of the album was mind-boggling and the music did not disappoint, even if it took some time to adjust to the fact it was fully plugged in and loud and proud! I am glad I did. Truthfully, it's the perfect third album from Michael Knott and company. The first Brow Beat was spiritual, introspective, and soul searching.  Alternative Worship led us down the path of authentic worship and seeking of the Holy One.  Now, we were ready to have fun, celebrate, and party!  Browbeats - Wither Wing is exactly that for us - a party.  And, like any good party - it better be fun and the second Browbeats is that to perfection.

These three albums were never promoted as a trilogy, but I came to see them as companion pieces that belonged together and I'm grateful they were in my life. I always thought they would be amazing to experience on vinyl - especially the softer songs. I could imagine the warm, dynamic vibes going from my vinyl record needle, out of my speakers, and filling much more than my home. I am glad we get to experience that now.  Thank you for being part of this experience.

RRV2003 BROW BEAT - UNPLUGGED ALTERNATIVE 637405141221

  • Mastered for vinyl by Rob Colwell (Sixpence, Mad At the World)
  • 12x12 lyrics insert

ABOUT THE ALBUM
The Christian Alternative scene of the 90’s was one that seemed to have a hard time fitting in anywhere: far too curious and challenging for the CCM bubble, but it's not like 120 Minutes was filled with poetry to drum loops either. So somewhere in the middle sits this glorious album putting together two of the most mid-90’s phrases around: Unplugged and Alternative. Songs of praise, reality, depression, joy, confusion, confession, invitation and separation fill this record by some of the best musicians of the scene. The original 1993 Brow Beat, Unplugged Alternative is hard to top. The album served as such an eye-opener to so many - simultaneously introducing our ears to good acoustic music, as well as to Michael Knott, LSU, The Choir, and others. Their quiet rebuking of legalism and abusive, rigid dogma was a turning point for a good many spiritual lives. The songs on this release had an undeniable impact on those in the 90’s scene seeking something more...no, NEEDING something more. Espousing one poetic message of truth after another, Alternative Unplugged offered hope that maybe we had found that very thing our souls craved. Even if we couldn’t wrap our heads around what we were hearing, we felt the powerful, emotional impact it was having on us as it resonated deep within us.

It can be hard to pick a favorite. The Choir does a fine job of their song "Wilderness," while Michael Knott puts together a song called "Deaf and Dumb" that sounds a little like a take on Rocket and a Bomb. Knott shows up later on an LSU track as well. Arguably, the show stoppers are Mortal and Terry Taylor. Taylor's "Have to Do For Now" has a dirge-like feel with a touch of dread included, implying there may be no quick solution to denying oneself or getting through life. Mortal, which up to this point was largely known as a screaming industrial band, puts out a melodic pensive song about the faithfulness of God and the Holy One’s promises that includes winds and mournful strings accompanied by a unique drum beat that accents the music, rather than fills the space. It's one of Mortal's best and possibly one of the best tracks in the 90’s Christian Music scene. The glut of worship music over the past 20 years has yet to approach the simple beauty of this song. It’s hard to resist the soul-melding tracks from the down-and-out Lost Dogs, an inventive jazzy tune by Dighayzoose, The Throes, Undercover, and Poor Old Lu. The album closes with Adam Again's "Don't Cry" which will have the opposite effect and is the perfect goodbye to a near perfect listening experience. Brow Beat - Alternative Unplugged is one of the best kept secrets of the 90’s Christian Alternative scene. Yet, after all this time, this reissue is more than just a collection of excellent songs; it’s a time capsule from an era of Christian music the likes of which we’ll probably never hear again. An era when artists who didn’t fit comfortably in either Christian or secular settings carved out a sort of parallel universe all their own, and in the process made music driven by faith and artistic expression. We don’t need to over-nostalgify that era — it had plenty of its own faults, flaws, and scandals — but that sense of authenticity and artistry comes through all the more clearly in this acoustic context. The 2024 Retroactive Records reissue comes on red vinyl, mastered for vinyl by Rob Colwell, and includes a 12x12 lyrics insert. Limited to just 200 copies. Enjoy.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT WITHER WING....
On the whole, Browbeats Presents Wither Wing is a great concept of strong interest to any fan of alternative music, especially of these featured musicians. The songs are well-made and catchy, drawing on recognizable classic and modern rock sounds which are kept far from staleness by the dynamic personalities of the players. Music Critic, Josh Spencer / The Phantom Tollbooth Reviews

RRV2004 BROW BEAT - WITHER WING 637405141252

  • Officially licensed
  • Originally released 1998 on Alarma Records
  • Remastered by Rob Colwell (Sixpence, Mad At the World)
  • 12x12 lyrics insert
  • Limited to just 200 copies world-wide
  • Limited number of original issue Wither Wing (Alarma Records) CD copies in stock!
  • Featuring Michael Knott (LSU, etc), Gene Eugene (Adam Again/Lost Dogs), Terry Scott Taylor (DA/Lost Dogs), Jason Martin (Starflyer 59, Ted Cookerly (EDL), Scott Silletta (Plankeye), Wayne Everett (Prayer Chain), Andy Prickett (Violet Burning/Prayer Chain), Chuck Cummings (Common Bond, LSU, Dakota Motor Co, etc), Andrew Carter (LSU & Love Tractor)

ABOUT THE ALBUM
Browbeats is not a group, but the name provides a convenient reference point to list two of the best Christian albums ever made. It is unclear just how related the two are (the first is actually attributed to Brow Beat—two words), except that some of the same artists (notably Michael Knott and Gene Eugene) are involved in production and songwriting. In the late ’90s, having written more great songs than he could possibly record with his various projects (Aunt Bettys, LSU, Bomb Bay Babies), Michael Knott  assembled an all-star studio band to back various vocalists in recording a few of them. Sort of like engineering your own tribute album—except that most of the songs were new and many cried out for a different voice and style than Knott would have given them. The result is an album that sounds like a compilation, but with more internal coherence than such projects generally have. Plus, again, most of these songs could not be found anywhere else. The tone of the second album, Wither Wing departs from the heaviness of life by being way more upbeat, rocking and gleefully playful than the debut (Unplugged Alternative). Wither Wing departs from the upbeat, playful tone with one exception - the title track - which is a slow Beatlesque song sung by Everett (Prayer Chain/Violet Burning) and moved along by Eugene's retro-mellow emotive keyboards.

The album kicks off with “Stonergirl” sung (or rapped) by Ted Cookerly of EDL with a hip-hop intro by Dax. As such, the song sounds like nothing ever heard from Knott before; it might appeal to fans of the P.O.D./Limp Bizkit style, but takes the listener by surprise on this particular album. “Getting Normal” is an Aunt Bettys song (from Ford Supersonic) remade with vocals by Scott Silletta of PlankEye and Fanmail. Gene Eugene sings “Out of Time,” which was written by Knott but now sounds like a long lost Adam Again outtake. Two versions of the Aunt Bettys’ rollicking “Rikki Racer” follow, one by Knott himself, and another by a mystery female vocalist. Terry Taylor sings two songs; “Happy Old Man,” which he cowrote with Knott, hearkens back to the glory days of Daniel Amos when they were recording tunes like “Ain’t Gonna Fight It” and “Father’s Arms” for Maranatha. “Just Wanna Be with You” is a great slow rocker, played and sung by one of Christian music’s best guitarists, Jason Martin of Starflyer 59. “Herb’s Garage” is one of Knott’s best ballads; it is sung here by an anonymous guest who sounds like David Lowery of Cracker but is probably Knott himself. Then, after a new rocking version of “Tattoo” that represents one of LSU’s finest recorded moments, Wayne Everett of The Prayer Chain sings the gorgeous lullaby that serves as the album’s closing title track.

All of the featured personalities have powerful enough styles to cast their own personas onto these songs, and thus please their respective fans; however, it is Knott's musical heart that beats throughout the project. Both of these albums reveal the secular side of Christian alternative rock. The mood of the first, however, is serious and quietly spiritual. The second is more of a party album, with an upbeat, playful quality and narry a hint of religion. The 2024 Retroactive Records reissue comes on red vinyl, mastered for vinyl by Rob Colwell, and includes a 12x12 lyrics insert. Limited to just 200 copies.

****The list of credited musicians is preceded by "Some of the musicians who appeared on this project are," implying there are uncredited performers.

  • Mastered for Vinyl by Rob Colwell (Sixpence, Mad At the World)
  • 12x12 Lyrics Insert
  • Limited to just 200 copies world-wide
  • Featuring Michael Knott, Gene Eugene, and Terry Scott Taylor

ABOUT THE ALBUM
A brilliant release that leans heavily on how weary we can find ourselves, but hope still shines through in the midst of our deepest darkness. All but one song is penned by Michael Knott (LSU, Aunt Betty's, Lifesavers, etc). It starts off strong with the first 3 tracks, driven by guitars, drums, bass, and piano. "On My Feet Again" is sung by Terry Scott Taylor of Daniel Amos with a nod to Spandau Ballet's "True" with the way the "high high high high" chorus part is executed. One of the many highlights is "Window," performed by Gene Eugene (R.I.P.) from Adam Again. Although written by Knott, it can easily mingle with some of the high points on Homeboys, Dig, or Perfecta, musically and lyrically. Gene Eugene is soulful with not just vocals but in his piano playing as well. "River of Love" is pure, unadulterated brilliance - sung by Knott - and carries a sense of frustration ("sick of empty banks, tanks, and pockets") mixed with worshipful longing ("pour me a bucket from your river of love"). Again, Eugene's piano playing is sublime and Knott has rarely sounded so convincingly vulnerable as he does here. This release feels like a necessary companion to the Brow Beat releases (Alarma Records as well) featuring much of the same cast. Alternative Worship is one of those releases worthy of repeated spins, because the music moves you deeply and it always seems to find a way to feed the soul. That is a rare find. If you are a fan of the music of Michael Knott, Terry Scott Taylor, or Gene Eugene this is essential. Mastered for Vinyl by Rob Colwell (Sixpence, Mad At the World, Deliverance), and comes with a 12x12 lyrics insert. Vinyl limited to just 200 copies.
