(*NEW-CD) *Last Copies!

REVIEW

The biggest surprise of 2004 is not the fact that Adriangale have been resurrected and recorded an album in secret, but the fact that this totally blows both previous albums right out of the water and then some. In fact, this is not only the band's best ever release, but the best ever release from Kivel Records as a whole and is a definite contender for album of the year. Previously content to walk in the shadow of Harem Scarem, Adriangale's main man Vic Rivera has really pulled one out of the bag. This release is light years ahead of Feel The Fire and Re:Programed for maturity of songwriting, quality of production and the performances delivered. This is a better record in every single department. And credit must also go to powerful new guitarist Scott Millar, replacing Eddie Campbell, who abandoned the band for a solo career on another label and hasn't been heard from since. For perhaps the first time, Adriangale have their own style. In no way have the guys abandoned their trademark sound, but they have built on that and have added a new twist that will define them as a band. Crunch is a more technical record ? it's a more intricate record and it's definitely a more complete record. This isn't as straight forward as previous efforts and features a darker and moodier vibe, not to mention a tougher, in your face guitar sound. Add to that a powerhouse production and added layers of everything else and you get an album that really will see the band hailed alongside the likes of better know artists. The attitude and sound are now closer to Danger Danger (4 The Hard Way) and Van Hagar than Harem Scarem and it suits the guys 100%.

I've always felt Adriangale were a great band, but something was missing ? especially production wise. The songs were not supported by the sound quality they needed. That too has been corrected here ? big time. Even better songs are now fully supported with a full beefy sound that rivals major releases for quality.

Track By Track:

Breaking Stride is a short, but rocking instrumental intro that fades before Crunch! kicks in. Jamie Rowe is in full force, singing with more passion and a more aggressive edge than ever before. This rocking track that isn't a world away from the track Feel The Fire is supported by a hard edged AC/DC style riff. The chorus takes a while to appear, but when it does it's a cracker! The additional layers of vocal harmonies and production quality are noted!

Faith is one of those uptempo melodic rock tracks that fans love ? a big crunchy chorus and a verse that is totally driven by a great vocal hook. The song is supported by some fine guitar work, but its Jamie's vocal work that adds extra melody to this straight up rocker.

Without A Moment's Notice is a first rate, emotional rock ballad. The track oozes class and features a big Def Leppard style sound, along with some highly emotional vocals. Harmony vocals are expertly placed again and come time for the killer chorus, the track is blasted into the stratosphere.

Tougher Than It Looks and When In Rome both take us back to the basics ? straight ahead rockers with striking guitar riffs and a tough lead vocal in both cases. "Tougher" features a strong chorus with some tasteful guitar soloing, while "Rome" features a swaggering groove and a more laid back vibe.

At this point I wanted to hear something different and the band delivers big time. This remains one of my favourite tracks from the album and showcases the band's new found maturity in songwriting and delivery. Long Gone is a dark and moody track, with an intense feel more in line with the last offerings from Van Halen. But the chorus strikes out against the rest of the song, transforming the angst ridden song into an anthemic sing along.

The Thin Line continues the darker and tougher vibe of the last track, with an even heavier guitar and rhythm line. Jamie sings within himself initially before breaking out and providing additional melody to the song, just with his vocals. The chorus is simple, but effective in the context of the track itself.

Question continues the dark and heavy vibe set by the last few tracks. The band remain true to themselves though, this is classic Adriangale - just a little more intense. The verse builds throughout, it's almost like you can hear something coming. And like the title track we get two versus before chorus time, so when it does arrive it has even more impact. And man, does this song rock. I love this chorus ? it remains mid-tempo, but Jamie reaches out there and is supported by layers of harmony vocals and some great guitar riffs. Killer stuff by any definition of the term. And this again reminds me of later day Van Halen and recent Danger Danger. Freedom is a 3 minute instrumental interlude in the best tradition of what Pete Lesperance does for Harem Scarem. Very melodic, very pleasant and in the scheme of the album, is well placed. It ends in the same tone as This Time starts. Softly does it, before guitars and the band kick in. This breezy feel good pop rocker is the perfect reply to several darker tracks and is another example of why this album works so well ? it's fabulously put together and really does have a smooth-ass running order. A great chorus and some more well placed harmonies make the track another winner. Finishing the album in fine style is the uptempo rock ballad Last Call. This is a rich, mid-tempo'd multi-layered track that again oozes class and features a moody and passionate vocal from Jamie and several layers of guitars. The Bottom Line What can I add to summarize? This really is the kind of release many fans live for and I hope it receives enough attention to get it into the hands of those that will appreciate it.

This is a classic melodic hard rock record in the best and most melodic tradition of the genre we all love. This is the type of record bands strive to record and labels search to release. I can't imagine anyone not being impressed with the record and I know that anyone that has previously bought anything Adriangale or Jamie Rowe is just going to be blown away. A major release by any standards and one that helps prove there is life in this genre and this style of music.

Jamie Rowe- Lead Vocals

Vic Rivera - Guitars Vocals

Scott Rif Miller- Guitars Vocals

Scott Novello - Bass Vocals

*Drums Vic Rivera

*Piano Alex Salzman

*Additional Backing Vocals Jason Spoor and Jamie Rowe

Executive Producer John Kivel

Produced By Vic Rivera

Engineered By Anthony Latt

Mixed By Alex Salzman

KIVEL RECORDS

Track Order:

Breaking Stride

CRUNCH

Faith

Without a Moments Notice

Tougher Than it Looks

When in Rome

Long Gone

The Thin Line

Question

Freedom

This Time

Last Call

ADRIANGALE - SUCKER PUNCH! I've heard a few people say they didn't care for this album, they have said: its "to commercial"- Well, first of all, how "commercial" is Black Metal anyway?!?! ...not very. Secondly, there's a lot of this Black Metal out there these days and in my opinion, a lot of it is just plain boring. I mean lets face it, a lot of this stuff sounds Exactly the same, its usually hard to tell one band from another- the extreme distortion, ambiance, blast beats, grind or screeching vocals, and so on...But, the thing about ANTESTOR- Its Classy. Really, Its classy black metal. They do it tastefully. Just when you think, this all sounds the same, they throw in some off the wall cello-violin-sitar-vocal arrangement/acoustical piece with some bizarre off time drum pattern. Their guitar riffs always catch me. I keep playing certain tracks over and over...Excellent, tasteful, and interesting; that's the KEY- INTERESTING. Antestor keep it interesting. No, I don't have a lot of black metal, most of what I have is actually considered "White" or "Unblack" metal: ANTESTOR, SLECHTVALK, A HILL TO DIE UPON, KEKAL, EXTOL, LENGSEL, SANCTIFICA, PANTOKRATOR, ELUVEITIE, ADMONISH, RENASCENT, SYMPATHY and thats pretty much all I really like in this particular Genre. But friends, ANTESTOR is very much a leader in the pack. If you like Doom/Norwegian/black metal style music, and say you don't like Antestor, your either a moron, a liar or just mad that they believe the Bible. They are superb at what they do... Try to imagine a cover band performing KISS songs. Now Imagine KISS doing KISS songs. Nothing is better than the real thing. Antestor is the real thing. Real Music. Real message. Real Hard. The album started the group down the path of traditional metal in walking a fine line between Judas Priest, Armored Saint, Metal Church and Saint but also touched upon the occasional thrash and speed metal moment. Signature tracks “The Money Mask”, “Mercenaries Of Injustice and “More Than Conquerors” epitomize the bellicose and hardy Armageddon sound in mauling with the best of them, while “(Liberation From) The Blazing Wasteland” ups the aggression and “We’re Outa Here” the all out speed either way. A more melodic side to the group’s songwriting abilities can be found in the brilliant “Nightlight”, delivering five minutes of non-stop and catchy riff driven groove, and “The Ship Of Changes”, a scintillating metal ballad highlighted by tasteful acoustic guitar. Ultimately, I embrace how Armageddon brought some much needed muscle and backbone to an eighties-metal scene that at times reveled in a bit too much fluff, hairspray and commercial hooks to a fault.

Armageddon actually came together under the name Second Chance in the early eighties after vocalist Mike Vance and guitarist Robby Lee met through an ad placed in a local newspaper. Later rounding out its line up with drummer Mark Wiley, the group began work on the material that would encompass the Second Chance demo tapes in addition to placing the track “(Liberation From) The Blazing Wasteland” on the East Coast Metal compilation from 1988. The change to the Armageddon moniker did not take place until prior to the deal with Talkingtown in 1989.

After the passing of twenty-five long years, I am pleased to announce Armageddon has received a much-deserved second chance (no pun intended) in that Vance and Lee reformed the group in 2008, and subsequent to seven years of hard work, released its sophomore album Up In Flames in the summer of 2015. Now known as Armageddon USA due to the high volume of bands going under the Armageddon heading, the group recruited current Raven members John Gallagher (contributing bass on three tracks) and Joe Hasselvander (handling all drum duties in addition to filling in on bass & guitar) to help complete the project. Many will recall Hasselvander from contributing his timekeeping abilities to several tracks on The Money Mask. its unyielding aggression but also precise in terms of the front to back refined guitar harmonies. “Spinner” follows and maintains the up-tempos leanings, even faster with frenetic verses approaching the tumultuous, albeit tempering (even if somewhat) for its melodically tinged chorus. Standing out on both are the trademark lower register vocals of Vance, who continues to operate in guttural to soulful to gritty vocal territory but can still cut loose with a high-pitched scream or falsetto at a moments notice. Those into other NWOBHM vocalists such as Rob Halford (Judas Priest), Al Atkins (original Judas Priest front man) and Josh Kramer (Saint) will feel right at home with his course style.

Also of heightened capacity is “Satisfaction” in aligning a delectable but mercurial machine like precision with tsunami-guitar walls and extended stretch of elevated dual lead guitar. This one proves no frills but effective. Albums title track is another barnburner, starting to a drum solo and scream followed by non-stop angst as a more bristling side to the band comes to the forefront: chorus proves curt as it gets, while rhythm section pummels remorselessly. What the two share is a sound akin to old school Saint (think Warriors Of The also delivers its share of mid-paced backbone. “Wanted Man” highlights a ton of reverberant groove in this capacity, no frills with its heavy hitting demeanor in which vast bass lines and melodic guitar harmonies contest. “In Your Face” proves aptly entitled as a catchy and riff driven slugger giving rise to a freight train like chorus and cool drum solo at the end, while “Time Divider” plays up a turbulent but melodic essence with its power low-end groove and muscular overtures throughout. Inherit to the trio is the fantastic guitar lead guitar work of Lee, Bussey and Hasselvander, who combine for some skillful dual lead harmonies and soloing of an adroit nature (I am uncertain as to who handled which solo on which song but it is very well done).

The group is also not afraid to throw the listener the occasional curveball. Ballad “Allie” is first to deserve mention, which unlike “Ship Of Changes” While far from bad and not filler, it is also my least favorite of the albums tracks in that musically I feel the group could have done a bit more with it. For instance, why not instead add a rhythm guitar track to turn it into a metal ballad or imbue things with an emotional guitar solo.

Also a bit unexpected is “Hypnotized”, a dark and ominous plodder with a down-tuned aspect that almost lends a portent doom metal quality. Of note is how Vance alters his vocal delivery to remind of Alice Cooper, with “Hypnotized” as a result lending itself perfectly to turn of the century Alice albums Brutal Planet (2000) I joke with people, when on tour, that I had to join a band to get out of the South. Now, 60 plus albums and a million miles of road, it?s in the blood. The road. The lands. The people. From the opener, "Dover Beach" to the real closer "Now You Know" it's something of a study in all that Autumn means to me. I wonder if it means something similar to all of our spirits. Things retire; nature goes dormant. Maybe the very essence of Hope is like that. It sleeps, for a spell, with the expectation that it'll return. Maybe in a different form. Who knows? That's the hope anyway. They say it springs eternal. I like that idea. Hope returning with a vibrancy that only the years of wisdom and "world-worn-ness" could imbue them with... I think I've found a certain suppleness in my voice over the years that was never present in the early work. Maybe now it's because i mostly sing alone (as opposed to with a band) and it fosters being in touch with the nuance of phrasing. Anyway... Melancholy, Longing, Fear, Darkness. You know, the landscapes of the reality behind the one we live in most of the time. I rarely heard anyone speak of these things as a kid. It was a subject all hush-hush if broached... The name Matrix was changed to Bride during the signing of the contract. This also marked a transition from the Matrix sound to the heavier and more aggressive metal sounds of Bride. The original drummer, Steve Childress was replaced after two recording projects with Joey Johnson who lasted one project. Stephan Rolland replaced Joey and became the very first Bride drummer. Matrix played anywhere and everywhere they possibly could - churches, night clubs, and coffee houses. Matrix played wherever the doors were open! Painted in makeup, wearing spandex, teased hair, jumping off amplifiers, and setting off explosions on stage - they constantly pushed the boundaries of what a "Christian" band could do and be. Their big break came in 1985 when they opened a show in Pottstown, PA for Christian hard rockers, Daniel Band. Pure Metal Records/Refuge Music Group saw the performance and signed them to a contract that would begin a marvelous and diverse career as leaders in the Christian hard music scene for decades to come. The songs that appear on this disc are from the recordings of PG-13 & Monkey See, Monkey Do. Both were cassette only releases. Some of these tracks would go on to be re-recorded and used on future Bride releases. These are the original tracks, as recorded by Matrix in 1983 and 1984. This 2014 Retroactive Records reissue comes in a full color 4-panel digipak, completely remastered by the ultimate mastering guru, J Powell at Steinhaus. Not since the release of the legendary Snakes in the Playground had any of their CDs been so highly anticipated. Dale?s vocals induced cold chills up the spine. Troy invented some of the most memorable and groove oriented metal licks of his career. Lawrence Bishop on bass drove the bottom end like a M1 Tank - pilfering this release with double bass thunder throughout. Contributing to the ultra heaviness of Skin For Skin is Live to Die-era guitar virtuoso Steve Osborne (R.I.P.). But Tsar Bomba resists the urge to play it safe and steps up to the task of offering fans an album that is passionate, creative and HEAVY! Listeners find Tsar Bomba engaging from start to finish as Bride intersperses acoustic and classical interludes throughout. Not only are these metal songs held together with the toughest riffs this side of Metallica, but it's one of the most melodic, hook-driven albums in the band's history! The end result is an explosive album of hypnotic heaviness that features the best of Bride's past even as is it showcases the band's seemingly endless ability to elevate to new levels of creativity. Formed in the Hawaiian Islands in 1989, they rose to local fame. It was there they met Daryn Hinton, the former manger of Stryper/Holy Soldier. She worked with the band on their first EP and introduced them to producer David Zaffiro, former Bloodgood guitarist, and producer of Holy Soldier. Known not only for their strength of conviction, but also as one of the only rock bands to ever come from Hawaii; their notoriety soon reached the shores of the mainland. The band was courted by several record labels but never quite found the right fit. In spite of the changing music industry, this critically acclaimed album was originally released as an EP, later re-released in Japan as a full length album, and now is made available to all. The 2011 Retroarchives Edition features all 13 tracks digitally remastered by J Powell at Steinhaus, and comes in a 6 panel digipak featuring lyrics and a band bio. With Zaffiro's hand at the helm, it?s no surprise that Broken Silence's sound and recording is of the highest caliber! Producer David Zaffiro even recruited Broken Silence vocalist Daniel Ysais to sing on several tracks on Holy Soldier's second album. It's so good (and CDs are so rare) that No Life Til Metal webzine writer Scott Waters (Ultimatum) wrote, Broken Silence is one of the greatest melodic metal bands that you have never heard. Two brothers from California, raised on groups like Daniel Amos, 441, The Altar Boys and others, Ronnie and Jason Martin stockpiled the cast-off synths and drum machines from the earlier 80's bands and delved into a style of techno-house music that was all their own. Not only did they eschew the guitar driven alt-rock aesthetic, which cast them as a niche within a niche, but they also cast off the all-too-common attitude within the Christian alternative music scene that Jesus should be hidden behind allegory, metaphor or other veils. The Martins embraced their love of Jesus and their love of digital sounds with equal passion. Their second effort, simply entitled Jesus, became an absolute favorite of the small techno music underground. Years later, Jason left to pursue the dreamy noise-pop or shoegazer rock with Starflyer 59 while Ronnie dove even farther into the keyboard realm with Joy Electric. As he gained a larger following, the demand for this early gem has grown and grown. It remains a testament to these young artists devotion to their own vision and Michael Knott's vision as an A&R director and label president.

TRACKS
Once Upon Your Lips 4:58
The Locket Maker 4:24
Old And True 3:45
Eve Leaf 3:05
Autumn Comes But Once, Dear 4:19
Homespun Is Happy 4:19
Simon Sister 3:31
Keepsake Melody 3:54
A Lull In The Fairest Maple 4:43
Uncle Art 4:02
A Cottage Song 4:40
Oleanders (Our Happy Place) 4:02
Sea Breeze 3:25
Merry 3:49
Wisteria Time 4:47

2-CD Set - Digipak w booklet

ABOUT THE ALBUM
The most creative artists of alternative CCM are often consigned to the gospel market ghetto, while in actuality making artistic statements that perceive popular trends before their time. The great genius of pop music most hurt by this injustice is Terry Taylor of DA, and the strongest support for this argument can be found on the band's great classic album, Doppelganger. Taylor's brilliant satire of popular culture "Mall" the radio station in St Paul, MN began giving significant support to an enjoyable, but lesser song with almost the exact lyrics and ideas, "Escalator of Life," right down to the mannequin imagery. Taylor's brilliant attacks on televangelists in "I Didn't Build it For Me" and "New Car" predate the Swaggart/Bakker and more recent Robert Tilton fiascos. Elsewhere, as in "Here I Am," "Youth With A Machine" and "Autographs for the Sick," DA predates ideas that have made others a heap of money in pursuit of MTV fame & teenage superstardom. This is the record that was amazingly ahead of its time. This is the DA record that could have catapulted them into mainstream success if anybody had invested enough money into their career. This is the record you should buy immediately. No serious alternative music fan, Christian or otherwise, should miss this record. After nearly three decades it sounds no worse for the wear. In partnership, Stunt Records and Born Twice Records offer the Two-Disc Collector’s Edition of Doppelganger by Daniel Amos. Disc one presents the album as you remember it, with remastered sonic clarity you may not have experienced before. Packaging: 4 panel jewel case. In 1982 Daniel Band burst on the scene with their song "I'm Sorry", the lead single from their debut album, On Rock. Daniel Band was one of the very first hard rock/metal bands with a Christian message. This debut was raw and full of energy that expanded the scope of hard music in the church. In 1982, there were 4 hard rock bands with a Christian message that could be found in your local bookstore. There was Jerusalem, Rez Band, Petra, Barnabas - and now Daniel Band. Christian rockers thought they'd found pure gold in Daniel Band. With those Geddy Lee (Rush) vibes and the wild and dirty guitar tones (ala Ted Nugent, early Kiss, AC/DC) throughout the album, fans knew they had something special with On Rock. This 2010 Collector's Edition has been digitally remastered (far better than the 2001 reissue on Magdalene Records) and features two brand new songs, "It All Turns To Rain" and "I Give You All", recorded by the band in 2009 specifically for this special release! To commemorate this classic album, retroactive Records asked Christian hard rock/metal historian Keven Crothers (White Throne Blog) to reflect on the significance of this historic album in the liner notes. Long out of print and hard-to-find, now is your chance to capture the hard edged charm of the debut release from Daniel Band on this Collector's Edition release. Metallica created Master of Puppets, Slayer bludgeoned the world with the classic Reign In Blood, Flotsam & Jetsam had Doomsday..., and Exodus boasted Bonded By Blood - all albums that would create the standard for all other speed metal releases. Weapons of Our Warfare was that album for Deliverance. It cemented the band's place as iconic speed metal royalty. To this very day, Weapons is still mentioned with hushed reverence among Christian metalheads as one of the elite speed metal albums of all time.

Guitarist Glenn Rogers had exited the band and former Recon guitarist George Ochoa had joined in his place. Weapons of our Warfare turned out to be one monster of a record, a genuine speed metal classic. Each and every song is played with a feverish fury, and once again the song writing is outstanding. Since 1985, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Jimmy Brown had been crafting some of the tastiest techniques for complex rhythms and highly technical rhythm guitar. Brown's guitar mastery drives the album from start to finish, setting new standards of power, precision, and stamina. The album shows marked musical growth with several adrenaline-driven, extended, multi-sectioned compositions foreshadowing the band's later progressive epics. And the trade-off guitar leads by Brown and Ochoa provide first rate riffage that will satisfy even the most skilled Guitar Hero addict.

A video version of the title track became the first Christian metal song to gain airplay on MTV, and it placed among the top three on that network's Headbanger's Ball countdown for twelve weeks in a row! In 1999, Lars Ulrich (Metallica) hosted a show in which he named Deliverance "Weapons..." as one of his top ten favorite metal videos of all time.

Weapons of Our Warfare (The Originals: Remastered) takes all the magic from the original release and magnifies it! Hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, the band worked to support the prison ministry that is now known as Follow Up Ministries, Inc. Gideon's Army worked closely with juvenile halls, the CA Youth Authority, and CA State and Federal prisons. Their sound started out as acoustic, laid back gospel similar to the Maranatha! bands out of L.A. Before long, the band would morph into a full-fledged aggressive Christian rock act. The change was better suited for their outreach which included street ministry (Jews for Jesus, S.O.S. San Francisco), Christian coffee houses, and concert ministry (Great America, Oakland Civic Auditorium, H.P. Pavillian San Jose) among many other ministry opportunities. It wasn?t until 1982 the band recorded and independently released Rock n Roll For Your Soul. The debut record reflected what was happening in the S.F.B.A. music scene at the time - dual lead guitars, horns and an R&B feeling. The 1986 release of the now iconic Warriors of Love brought big changes both in personnel and sound. Gone were the horns, dual guitar leads and most notably there was a more aggressive rock format. The new sound stood shoulder to shoulder with bands like Van Halen, Night Ranger, Petra, and .38 Special. The album sold like crazy at shows, but with no formal distribution many people never got their hands on the now high dollar collectible vinyl of this legendary classic rock release. Retroactive Records has remastered this essential 1982 AOR album, and it is now available in digital format for the first time ever. The 2015 reissue is a four panel full color digipak, and is part of the Retroactive Records Legends Remastered Series.

Track Listings

1. Can You Still Turn Away?

San Francisco Bay Area based Gideon’s Army has always been about ministry. One need look no further than the groups early seventies Contemporary Christian Music scene beginnings, where it got its start playing acoustic based Gospel rock (sort of like the Maranatha! bands of the period from Los Angeles) in working closely with juvenile halls, the California Youth Authority and California State and Federal Prisons. Later morphing into a plugged in Christian rock act, Gideon’s Army expanded upon its outreach by also including street ministry (Jews for Jesus and S.O.S. San Francisco) along with Christian coffee houses and an ongoing concert ministry with performances at Great America, Oakland Civic Auditorium and H.P. Pavilion San Jose.

It was not until 1982 that Gideon’s Army released its full-length debut Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul, which potentially got lost in the shuffle of much heavier contemporaries such as Resurrection Band, Petra, Jerusalem, Daniel Band, Servant and Barnabas among others. It also did not help that Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul suffered from the same low distribution and lack of promotion often inherit to independent releases of the time, noting how the Vision self-titled debut from 1984 also fell beneath the radar for the same reasons. Nevertheless, after having been out of print and next to impossible to find for decades, Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul has been given a second chance at life after having been re-mastered and re-issued by Retroactive Records in the fall of 2015.

Musically, early eighties Gideon’s Army took a strong rhythm and blues slant in featuring a jazzy horn section and duel guitar attack of founding members Dave Angels and Mike Banke. But labeling Gideon’s Army as just rhythm & blues would also be inaccurate and potentially misleading in that Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul also reflects nuances of classic rock, AOR, hard rock, Southern rock and even some progressive aspects, particularly in light of how half the albums 8 tracks extend into 6 to 7 minute range. When placed alongside follow up efforts Warriors Of Love (1986) and Grace (1990), both of which took a melodic rock to AOR heading, Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul proves the most experimental and multi-dimensional of the three Gideon’s Army recordings.

Take six-minute opening cut “Light”, for instance, a slow and moody six and a half minutes carried by copious (and very flattering) Hammond B3, a marked bass presence and light rhythm guitar underpinnings. Where the song shines is during its instrumental moments, including the fusion to feedback driven first minute and instrumental break at the halfway point in which organ and lead guitar contest.

Gideon’s Army reflects its rhythm & blues sentiments on the two that follow. “Dreams” jumps out of the gate at once, a frolicking and mirthful happy go lucky piece carried by a spicy horn section and Second Coming based lyrical themes. Searing lead guitar aligns with the blithe scene. “Lift Your Heart” takes a more mid-paced approach, calmly maneuvering its first minute to guitar feedback only to gain impetus as the group’s signature horn section returns over a layer of funk-flavored bass. “The Lift your heart unto the Lord” vocal harmonies help make a worshipful statement.

“What Is Love” represents this reviewer’s choice track from its reserved progressive mentality. Albums longest at seven minutes, the song proves another deliberate and melancholic plodder in similar fashion as “Light”, exuding a forthright keyboard mix and even textures of rhythm guitars. What sets “What Is Love” apart is the extended instrumental section that features tightly woven guitar harmonies of an emotional Southern nature.

Halfway through the album and one cannot help but embrace the Gideon’s Army co-lead vocal approach, with front men Dave Angels and drummer Jerry Anderson bringing a similar classic tenor and melodic tinctured vocal style. Besides, you know you are dealing with a group that arose out of the seventies when you have a drummer that is also a lead vocalist!

Melodic hard rocker “Better Days” ranks with the albums heaviest. The keyboards at the start of the song would not sound out of place on the first couple Boston albums, while the distinct guitars that ensue deliver ample doses of edge and bite in aligning with layered vocal melodies of a copious nature. Helping to take “Better Days” past the six-minute mark is an extended jam-fusion instrumental section in which the group highlights its abundant musicianship.

Three and a half minute “On The Move” is the most guitar driven of the rhythm & blues numbers. Aligning a rollicking horn section with sharp rhythm guitars, the song gives rise to high-energy groove in abundance within a concise up-tempo package. The cool Southern flavorings return for the instrumental moments. Whereas my favorite Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul moments are its most progressive, the rhythm & blues cuts are laudable all the same- I rate them a slight notch below in above average to good territory (fans of early Sweet Comfort Band should feel right at home, though).

“New Man”, last of the six-minute tracks, also stands out with a reserved and moderate disposition. The song sets a steadfast tempo, aligning another horn section with soothing tinctures of organ and a big as it gets bass line. More melodic vocal harmonies help tie everything together. My favorite part is the saxophone solo that carries things instrumentally (sort of like “The Return” off Rez Band’s Awaiting Your Reply from 1978).

Ending the album is “Can You Still Turn Away?”, a relaxed and laid-back five minutes in which Hammond B3 (the work of keyboardist Doug Naruo deserves note) plays a heightened role along with plenty of distinct saxophone throughout. Some very complementary bluesy tinctures rise to the surface in the process. Yes, a good way to close things out, but I also cannot help but feel a better balanced track listing might have resulted if another heavier rocking and up-tempo track had been included instead.

As one might imagine for an independent early eighties release, production sounds a bit dated but not to a fault when factoring the Retroactive re-mastering. While I do not have an original copy of Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul to invite comparison, overall sound avoids any overriding thinness or muddiness. That said do not expect any big budget polish or refinement either.

The Retroactive re-issue comes in a 4-panel digi-pak with no lyrics or extensive liner notes. Lyrics, however, are available online and leave little doubt as to the Gideon’s Army ministry minded ways.

Consider “On The Move” in this capacity –

Jesus moved away the stone
Threw the devil off the throne
Comin' back to life
He lives - Every life to us He gives
For He's on the move, provin' that he's God
For He's on the move; the solid rock

Christ is risen to His throne
We'll be taken to our home
You can live here in your sorrow
But I'm leavin' maybe tomorrow

- in addition to “Light”:

With your heart, embrace the depth of Wisdom
And you'll find it all returns to simple Truth
For His foolishness is beyond our wisdom
And His weakness is beyond our strength

Take my hand, and I will lead you
To the One who has the power to give you life
Face the light, my friend, and you'll see God's reflection
Face the light, my friend, and you'll finally see

Again, “Dream” deals with the Second Coming:

I had the very strangest dream last night
I saw a flash of glory from on high
It happened in the twinkling of an eye
I saw myself a-flyin' through the sky

When I reached the clouds, I realized
That I was not alone in my surprise
I looked around, and saw to my delight
That all my friends were flying by my side

“Can You Still Turn Away?” delivers a salvation message:

Can you still turn away
After all that He has done?
God has purchased all your sin
Through the suffering of His Son
If you trust in Jesus
He will give you a new life
No more death...you're a child of God!
Can you really pass Him by?

Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul adds up to a very fine Christian rock album for its era. I believe that ‘rock’ is the best description of what is going on here musically in that Gideon’s Army does not have the guitar driven oomph to fall within hard rock territory but also features enough backbone to set itself apart from much of the CCM of the time. Musical variations also play a key role in that how many of the Gideon’s Army contemporaries mixed aspects of classic and Southern rock, AOR, rhythm & blues and progressive rock and make it work in such a concise package?

Ultimately, I feel a great deal of the Rock N’ Roll For Your Soul success attributes to its independent release, which allowed Gideon’s Army to exercise that much more creative freedom in light of how different the album might have turned out if released on a CCM label. By going independent the group did not have to worry about some slick label executive hovering over its shoulders and suggesting “Guys in order to make this work, I am going to need you to stick to a three and a half minute verse-chorus-verse format for me, OK”. Hence, the musical experimentation and songs extended past six minutes that you did not often see from early eighties Christian groups. is an industrial metal goth project similar in style to Savior Machine. I understand that this album here, I-Dragon-I, is pretty much a follow up to the Wedding Party album. I don't remember who all was in the Wedding Party band but I-Dragon-I is comprised by William Ashton Knight (the same vocalist from Wedding Party), Jamie McCavanagh (lead guitar, programming, other instruments), Sean Savacool (bass), and Libby Luckey (backing vocals). This indeed is a "follow up" to Wedding Party's "Anthems", had they stayed the course, this is likely the direction they would've been in by the time this ep came out, Only thing missing are the angelic vocals of Sherri Luckey, who is now in the band "Dark Valentine." The "muddy/over-layered production" is what the band was shooting for, as they were going in a bit of a more industrial sound than WP, though you will find that sound in songs like "Even You" and "Raven's Warning" from the "Anthems" lp. What you will find strikingly similar to WP is the spirit of the music, "the anointing", if you will. Like WP, these songs are forged out of the fires of tribulation, they bleed w/pathos from the soul of one who has been through "the dark night of the soul" and experienced the healing and grace of God. Anyone who has experienced such trauma and anguish of the soul will relate to this, both this and WP have spoke to me like few other bands have...

Style: Progressive/Power Metal
Tracks: 11
Time: 50:14
Lyrics: Yes
Packaging: 8 panel digipak
Release Date: November 10, 2009
Catalog Number: RAR7882
UPC: 845121012088

ABOUT THE ALBUM

Jacobs Dream quickly rose to the top of the global Progressive Metal heap with their astounding 2000 self-titled debut and the 2001 follow up release Theater Of War. I highly recommend the M8 release to Michael Knott fans. To the Knott curious getting the digital version should give you everything you need. I will be reviewing the album proper and separate the M8 release review as a sub-blurb.

"This Is the Healing" was my introduction to L.S.U. and the incredibly prolific artist and alternative Christian music pioneer Michael Knott. I don't like all of his stuff (the well-received "Dogfish Jones" for example) and much of his music lacks a certain polish (often and most obviously from limited production standpoints) which can be a blessing as it's part of the charm and a curse as it limits his appeal to a wider market. "This Is the Healing" certainly lacks a sophistication and polish and it's definitely not nearly for everyone. Musically and lyrically it's abrasive calling especially the Christian community to account ("Not A Cussword" and "G-G-G") amid buzzsaw guitars and heavy percussive rhythms. Given that this music was largely circulated within a small segment of CCM (Contemporary Christian Music) it was nonetheless created for all to consume, believers and non-believers alike. Knott was always concerned with expressing the gentility and tenderness of God's heart for His troubled and tried creation. Knott superimposed man's fickle, flawed, and violent heart over his vision's of God's love for us so as to contrast it and make it clear all the more. The title track, "This Is the Healing", is a clear call to one and all from the mouth of God to "give me your tears from all your bitter years." It was this clear-minded approach that made Knott so loved by a select few while his distrust of the machines of man, including institutionalized religion especially within the larger Americanized Christian culture, made him hated and distrusted by so many more.

L.S.U.s (Lifesavers Underground) first release was the heavy, dark, almost gothic classic "Shaded Pain". They followed it with the much lighter, fun at times, and creatively diverse "Wakin' Up the Dead". The third L.S.U. release of "This Is the Healing" kept the buzzsaw guitar sounds generated initially on WUTD and pared the lyrics down even further, making them much more obvious and less poetic and dense as they had been on SP. Dwelling on topics that CCM wouldn't touch Knott called for hope and healing amidst the darkness and brokenness of our lives by seriously considering the type of people we are/ claim to be and then falling in repentance before the Lord. Some of these songs continue to resonate like "Suicide", "Not A Cussword", "G-G-G", and "This Is the Healing". Others are obscurities like "Loved One" and "Chucky". Knott would go on to far greater heights than TITH but this remains an essential and fascinating stop along the way. 3.75 stars.

1) Miracle ~ The drum machine that starts us off is painfully obvious and was not the best way to start the album. The song is a sobering drone of vignettes of people who are suffering and waiting for the proverbial and literal miracle. The guitars are like buzzsaws and I'd never heard this sound before at that time.

2) War ~ This song made use of Knott's sister (I think) doing a little operatic singing at the beginning. It sounds like a tightly constructed and wound haunted house (of all things) that is unwinding, unspooling. There are moaning voices, morose vocal tones, and it's a bit weird. I think that Knott means the song to be an allegory for trimming the branches to save the tree, or cutting off the hand to save the body...but he applies it to a sinister effect.

3) Suicide ~ Of all things this song, though it's not poppy in any way, has more energy and an upbeat tone compared to the first two tracks. It's also the first memorable track with the refrain of "Don't die/ Don't give me that suicide/ I want you for my love". Knott paints a sympathetic picture for the one who is at their wits' end.

4) Not A Cussword ~ Chances are if you're familiar with Knott but not this release you've still heard this song. It's one of the greats. Concisely stating a gospel narrative and talking as from Jesus' own voice Knott repeatedly sings in almost a craze "I'm not your cussword, am I-eeee?" Shocking to the senses of those who claim to worship Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior on the one lip but turn around and use His name as a declarative epithet with the other lip; shocking and hopefully convicting. I love the part when Knott slurs "I forgive...I forgive...you...."

5) Hummingbird ~ Over a buzzing bed of guitar and a looping drum a female vocal (Knott's sister again I believe) goes all opera in an alto vocal. I don't know what she was singing and this is one song I don't like.

6) Loved One ~ Picks up the literal pace/ tempo and is a prayer someone's loved one. It puts some energy back into the proceedings.

7) Shallow ~ Is a good song that gets overshadowed by the better songs on this release. It's a slow chunking plod that asks the listener "are you living life shallow" and tells "I've found love that will never be over". Knott doesn't do scat on the song but he adds his nonsensical vocal flourishes throughout.

8) Chucky ~ I always wondered who exactly is Chucky and why was he going to London? The song's kinda fun and memorable for all the wrong reasons. I still haven't learned who Chucky was.

9) G-G-G ~ A harrowing song, and terribly convicting too. "One day I'd like to be the judge/ Judge, jury, and the executioner/ To the ones who kill the unborn/ And to the men who seek after their own//G-G-G Jesus, give me, give me, give me love/ Give me, give me, give me Understanding". Fantastic lyrics that penetrate deeper than what I listed highlight this important song. I think that the melodic stutter that Knott uses as part of his plea/ prayer for himself in the chorus is both intentional and perfect as it plays up the fault in ourselves, that area where our pride puffs up and makes us feel like we can stand in final self-righteous judgment over others. The words in this song are hard to swallow (he both distances and likens himself to a Ku Klux Klan member and snarls at and humanizes a child molester), but we join him in these affiliations when we sing along in the very catchy chorus and his prayer becomes our prayer too. One of the great Knott songs of all time, served by a solid thick bass line.

10) This Is the Healing ~ The album ender and title track hits high notes with Knott's vocals rising to exclaim the moment of salve and salvation while the rhythm section keeps it clear and bright and the buzzing guitars offer more of a bouncy cadence. It's a final moment of exultation and it works perfectly. They nailed it with this one.

M8 records re-issued this classic and threw one 3 bonus tracks. It was a great thing they did as this album was either previously not set to CD or incredibly hard to find on CD. The re-issue keeps the track listing in order if I remember correctly and presents the source material clearly and cleanly. The three bonus songs are a cleaned up version of "G-G-G" that strips the buzzsaw guitar in favor of a high strung steel string picked electric and this recording keeps the drum machine sound but makes the whole song sound fresh. Second up is "She Lies" which, according to Knottheads on H, was originally a Bomb Bay Babies demo. It's a blast of raucous but barely focused energy and the guitar line and vocal melodies sounds like it they were probably later reworked into/ as the basis for the song "Liar" off of Knott's solo debut album "Screaming Brittle Siren". That was a kicking song! "She Lies" less so. Lastly there is "I Can't Wait" which sounds like a demo version for the same song that is a nice piece of pop confection found on "Kiss of Life".

LIBERTY 'N JUSTICE - LIGHT IT UP (*NEW-CD, Retroactive) Stryper, Bloodgood, Bride + more participate and play

CD

Liberty N' Justice (the Melodic Rockers with a Message) formed 19 years ago and with 8 albums to their credit, they are still blasting out new music louder than ever! Starting with Welcome To The Revolution from 2005, Murr has recruited some of the best musicians and vocalists in the business (both past and present) to assist with the songwriting and recording of each LNJ album. Welcome To The Revolution, for instance, featured eighteen different vocalists, including Michael Sweet (Stryper), Ken Tamplin (Shout), Jamie Rowe (Guardian) and Lou Gramm (Foreigner). The trend continued over the next eight years, with LNJ releasing five full-length studio albums, one EP and two compilations before culminating with the 2013 2-CD set The Cigar Chronicles in which 76 guest musicians participated. What many do not know, however, is that LNJ actually got its start as a two-man band in which Murr joined forces with vocalist Patrick Marchand. The pair recorded four albums over a nine-year span, starting with Armed With The Cross (1992) but also encompassing Big Guns (1994), Forever Till The End (1996) and Bargain Bin (2000). The Vow, the fifteenth LNJ album from the summer of 2014, finds Murr relinquishing his all star project ways and returning LNJ to its full-fledged band roots. This reveals itself in how for the first time since 2000 Murr has recorded an LNJ album with the same nucleus of musicians: Joining Murr on bass is vocalist David Cagle, guitarist JK Northrup (King Cobra, XYZ), keyboardist Eric Ragno (China Blue, Graham Bonnett, Faiths Edge) and drummer Michael Feighan (White Cross, King James). What has not changed is musical direction in that LNJ stays true to its eighties influenced melodic rock, commercial hard rock and melodic metal roots. Those that have followed LNJ over the years know there are some variances therein, ranging from the lighter touches of the acoustic based Independence Day (2007) and AOR influenced Chasing A Cure (2011) to the driving metal of Hell Is Coming To Breakfast (2012). In between LNJ settles into a steady groove of melodic hard rock on Light It Up (2010) and The Cigar Chronicles (2013). The Vow presents with a best of both worlds scenario in featuring a delectable selection of heavier and lighter cuts I see appealing to fans of all eras of LNJ?s history. It has been in Knott's heart to create an album that would bring awareness to the overwhelming difficulties that U.S. and allied troops encounter upon returning from combat, especially Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. PTSD, the leading cause for homelessness as well as alcohol and drug abuse among veterans, is a psychological and neurological disorder. This is heavy subject matter that needs to be brought to the surface in order to honor and help those who have served our country. The weighty issues surrounding PTSD are pulled to the front line by the heaviest L.S.Underground album to date. After recording over 15 albums, Michael claims PTSD the most important record he has done since This Is The Healing. Most of the songs address the difficult re-entry issues of American veterans returning from war. Child's Play is the prayer of a child for his Dad, while Miss America addresses the difficult memories of a medic on the front lines. Of the long journey back to wholeness, Souls Are So Low and The Hallows express that haunted sense of being in two places at once here trying to assimilate to life as normal, and still in one's mind experiencing Lights Out in Baghdad. Veterans live with the fear one is Never Gonna Come Back - at least not completely. Packaged in a four panel digipak, this 2012 Retroactive Records release has been digitally mastered by J Powell of Steinhaus for maximum sound capacity. The guitar team of Andy Strauss and Rob Clark perform capably when at their best, but more often than not their lead guitar work comes across in a manner that is sub par if not uninspired. Please note that this reflects less on the ability of the two and more on their lack of experience and the necessary time in the studio. While bassist Dean Pellen puts in a solid showing, the underplayed drumming of Dave Daubert does not always cut it. The strength of the bands sound, however, resides in the first rate melodic flavored but slightly raspy lead vocals of Charlie Clark.

Rock The Flock is held back by a low budget and muffled sounding production job. The rhythm guitar would benefit from a bit of polish, while the lead guitar is not placed high enough in the mix. Likewise, the rhythm section ends up sounding thin and muddy.

The edgy rhythm guitar at the start of the albums title track plays a reduced role in the mix once the song reaches its first verse. After the rhythm guitar returns to its place of prominence, "Rock The Flock" picks up in pace gains for a good hard hitting chorus. An instrumental passage featuring thirty seconds of insipid lead guitar work does not quite make the grade. The lyrics to "Rock The Flock" do not lack in meaning but could have been written better:

Jesus power is here to stay
Rock you into the light of day
Don't stop, rock the Flock

Carried its duration by a restrained mix of rhythm guitar, the watered down melodic hard rock of “Labor Of Love” is held back by a trite sounding chorus with an all around uninspired feel. The band could have improved upon an instrumental passage limited to several seconds of bland lead guitar work. This song is just plain bad. Its lyrics, on the other hand, are quite good:

You see through my disguises, you see right through me Lord
I can fool the people, but who's the real fool
I know I've got some problems, I need a touch from You
Please mend my broken heart, and let me fight the fight for You

"Try To Understand" commences to an aggressively driven guitar riff before slowing to a steady mid-tempo pace for its first verse. As the song picks up in pace, the same riff opening it returns to back a strong chorus conveyed in a forceful manner. Strauss and Clark are at their best with thirty seconds of top notch dual lead guitar work.

"Travel The Rough Road" is held back by its lack of a noteworthy melody line. Opening at an upbeat tempo, the song slows for its first verse only to pick up in pace for a chorus that I might describe as average-to-good at best. The lead guitar work carrying a minute long instrumental passage does not stand out in the mix as it should. "Travel The Rough Road" is a song about faith:

There is a peace in knowing that you are His
There is something there you can't resist
He gives you power to understand
He gives you light and a helping hand

Introduced to a bluesy mix of rhythm guitar, "Why Must You Run" gradually gains momentum during its first verse until it crests with an abundance of energy for one of the albums stronger choruses. The rhythm guitar takes the song through a minute long instrumental passage. "Why Must You Run" details the need for salvation.

God so loved the world He made, He sent His only Son to save
That whosoever believes would never die

"To The Rock" begins to the sound of a cheering audience that transitions to a combination of pounding drums and vocal harmonies. Once an edgy rhythm guitar kicks in, it quickly drives the song to a chorus with a good catchy hook. I wish the band had elaborated on an instrumental passage limited to several brief seconds of lackluster lead guitar work.

A nice blues flavored guitar riff propels "Answer Our Call" from front to back, the song slowly advancing through its verse portions until it builds and peaks for a powerfully delivered chorus coming across in the form of a battle cry:

Rock on in spite of it all - rock on in spite of them all...

A minute of the albums best lead guitar work only adds to the songs appeal.

The progressive influenced "Riding Out The Storm" is by far the albums strongest track. Taking off fast and heavy, a ton of guitar driven energy impels the song ahead until it transitions to a chorus that continually repeats its title in an anthem-like manner. Thirty seconds of technical dual lead guitar work follows its second chorus before forty-five seconds of rhythm guitar harmony ensues the third. "Riding Out The Storm" deals with patience and perseverance in times of trial.

You feel a problem is all you've caught
You feel confused, it comes with pain...
The Spirit speaks, He holds us back
Other times he tells us to attack
The power comes, as Father wills
Sometimes in waiting we become fulfilled

Due to both the pedestrian feel to its chorus and the fact it comes in at over seven repetitive minutes, "Sing" does not always hold up under continuous play. After the song moves forward to a blend of rhythm guitar and bass, it launches into a sweeping instrumental section featuring an overdone three minute long guitar solo. And while I appreciate it when a band displays confidence in its instrumental sound, the lengthy open air guitar solo closing out the song comes across on the indulgent side.

Rock The Flock showcases the talent of a young and energetic band with a bold and upfront message. The album, however, fails to make the grade due to the fact Messiah Prophet Band at this early stage in its career lacked the needed maturity in the crucial area of songwriting. The songs, with a few notable exceptions, are insufficient in depth and fail to hold up under repetitive and trite sounding melodies. The albums low budget production job only compounds the problem. Fortunately, Messiah Prophet Band returned two years later with a terrific sophomore effort entitled Master Of The Metal in which it displayed 110% improvement.

Review by: Andrew Rockwell

Track Listing: "Rock The Flock" (3:36), "Labor Of Love" (3:46), "Try To Understand" (4:44), "Travel The Rough Road" (4:08), "Why Must You Run" (5:34), "To The Rock" (3:55), "Answer Our Call" (5:21), "Riding Out The Storm" (4:50), "Sing" (7:09)

Musicians
Charlie Clark – Lead Vocals
Andy Strauss – Guitars
Rob Clark – Guitars
Dean Pellman – Bass
Dave Daubert - Drums

ABOUT THE ALBUM

Available on CD for the very first time as Volume 5 in the Born Twice Records / Legends Remastered collectible full color digipak series of early Jesus Music from the 70's. The Anatomy of Melancholy saw the band experimenting more and resulted in a very unique and amazing release featuring one disc of melodic, dark death / doom and a second disc of dark, acoustic tunes to complement the heavier numbers. My Silent Wake's third album takes another strong step forward in the band's quest to blend unique melodies with strong and memorable arrangements without forsaking the wall of sound for which they are already well-known. Each of the 7 songs (most clocking in at over 8 minutes apiece) are carefully crafted, featuring a wide variety of vocals, including Ian Arkley's trademark baritone snarl, clean vocals from Ian, Andi, and Kate, and more blackened vocals from Jason (listeners were given a taste of this on Anatomy). The guitars soar with excessive, heavy, chunky riffage on the harder songs, and delicate soundscapes on the softer numbers. Kate, an extremely well-rounded classical musician, adds a great deal of musical depth and spirit that is typically lacking from an extreme metal release. The drums and bass also shine through like never before, causing the entire composition to flow and possess a more organic feel amidst the brain-pounding it induces. A Garland of Tears is easily My Silent Wake's strongest album to date and is one of the freshest releases in the death / doom scene in quite some time. Fans of My Dying Bride, Candlemass, Trouble, Paramaecium, Dead Can Dance, and all self-respecting fans of death, doom, gothic, metal, or just great heavy music owe it to themselves to pick up this fantastic release.

Album Title: Preservation Restoration Reconstruction

Label: Bombworks Records

Style: Acoustic Medieval Death/Doom

Product ID: BWR0613

Barcode: 845121071207

The acoustic album has been over 2 years in the making.
