While they have put out many good albums and matured and diversified since, I along with many other fans of the band would feel that this album was never surpassed by their subsequent work.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eLyrically, this is bold Christianity, with spiritual warfare a key theme. If you ever wanted to hear a metal version of Psalm 23, here it is, albeit one of the slower songs on the album.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eI would recommend this to any thrash\/speed metal fan, and indeed to any metal fan in general, Christian or otherwise. Carlsen in terms of Les Carlsen, the iconic front man of veteran Christian metal band Bloodgood and the six studio albums and three live albums it has released since forming in the mid-eighties. Attributed to Carlsen are songwriting credits on classic Bloodgood tracks “Crucify” and “The Messiah” (off Detonation from 1987) that combine for a ‘theatrical rock opera’ detailing the crucifixion, death on the cross and ultimate resurrection of Christ. Cromwell from the standpoint of Don Cromwell, who acted as the touring bassist with renowned pop group Air Supply between 1983 and 1987 in addition to touring and recording with rock legend Eddie Money over a six year period. To his credit, Cromwell co-wrote three tracks off the hit self-titled Air Supply album from 1985.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ePlease note that The Lucky Side was released with very little fan fair and virtually no promotion. Carlsen Cromwell failed to produce any press material in support of the album while the group does not have a Facebook page or website (the www.carlsencromwell.com web address included with the packaging ‘liner notes’ does not work). Neither artist mentions The Lucky Side at their respective Facebook pages; a Google search reveals next to no information about Carlsen Cromwell either. Hence, I consider myself somewhat lucky (no pun intended) to have discovered the group in the first place (from a thread at the Christian Metal Realm). Nevertheless, if you are like me then The Lucky Side comes as a surprise, albeit a very welcome one.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThose previously referenced laid back and reserved qualities reveal themselves in the seventies based rock to straight on classic rock laced with AOR touches inherit to The Lucky Side. Such earthy musical territory, as one might imagine, proves the perfect fit for the trademark gravelly and raspy vocal qualities of Les Carlsen. He joins a long line of eighties metal vocalists - namely Mike Lee (Barren Cross), Rey Parra (Sacred Warrior) and Michael Sweet (Stryper) - that sound remarkably fresh following the passing of so many years. That said it must be reinforced The Lucky Side is by no means a metal or hard rock album along the lines of Bloodgood, noting how I can see fans of the group (not to mention Carlsen’s vocal abilities) appreciating what Carlsen Cromwell brings to the table.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe Lucky Side starts strongly to four equally good tracks. Opener “Livin’ High” begins to light electric guitars and airy keyboards to create an inviting if not warmly tinctured atmosphere. The soulful female backing vocals help to lend to the AOR flavorings at hand. “Fired Up Tonight” takes the more upbeat heading, with a strong sense of groove and mirthful guitars aligning with the affluent melody upholding the song. Nice emotional range bestowed by Carlsen on this one.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Can’t Find Love” gives rise to an acoustic based direction in tempering the pace (even if somewhat) as hints of organ decorate the backdrop. The blithely done refrain ranks with the albums best. Likewise, “Lucky Side” maintains the acoustic heading but in the more groove driven package, as added soulful female backing vocals and bluesy lead guitar (of which I wish there were more throughout the album) play defining roles. The albums clean and crisply textured production cannot help but stand out on this one.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eTwo re-imagined versions of classic Bloodgood tracks follow. “The Only One”, originally “The World (Keeps Movin’ Around)” from Rock In A Hard Place (1988), maneuvers its distance to delicate guitar tinges (that almost reflect a U2 feel) as the songs unmistakable melody remains in your head. Lone difference is how lyrics change for the refrain:\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eStruggles for power and position\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eFrom life and death through transition\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eYou’re the only one, my morning sun\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eThe only one who matters to me\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“Bad Credit”, “It’s Alright” off Out Of The Darkness (1989), also stands out for its recognizable melody but with acoustic guitars and groove overtones in place of the driving guitars from the original. A stylish acoustic guitar and keyboard tradeoff carries the instrumental moments. Once more, the refrain presents with altered lyrics:\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhen you lease a life worth living\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eYou can buy it on time\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eYour credit is bad\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI call that dying\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eDeath’s a bitter wine\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eI find the album hit and miss as it moves over its final half. My favorite of the remaining tracks is “Color Me Blue” from its airy and ethereal - almost melancholic - nuances of a moody and acoustic laced nature. Also notable is “Being Young”, as a mirthfully flowing melody aligns with hints of organ and poignantly done guitars aspects to establish an uplifting setting. Beef up both of these with some rhythm guitar and put them on All Stand Together (Bloodgood’s most commercial release) and they would not sound out of place.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e“I Believe” does not do it for me, and mostly due to its Country Western flair in which acoustic guitar interweaves with slide guitar. Obviously, this one is not my cup up tea, although I can see others embracing it. I also tend to pass on ‘We’re Not Wasted” (another light and ethereal piece) and “Crazy Kind Of Love” (up-tempo and vibrant). While technically sound and well constructed, the two come across somewhat trite (in my opinion) from reflecting too much of a sameness quality when placed alongside other The Lucky Side tracks.\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003e\u003cbr data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003eWhich leads to the main complaint I have about the album: The Les Carlsen and Don Cromwell partnership could have done that much more with the material here; in other words, they did not explore all the potential musical options that would allow for the more diverse release. Consider how they could have taken a song in a traditional blues based direction, spiced up another with a jazzy horn section or compose a piece giving rise to a heavier rocking (though not necessarily metal or hard rock) edge. While the album does not present with Bloodgood level heaviness, it is good to hear Carlsen’s signature gravely vocal qualities- again, it cannot be understated how well his voice has held up over the years. However, once the band's follow-up albums were released, the glaring production issues of \"Warriors\" became more apparent . In 2004, Saint decided to re-record their debut EP as a sort of celebration of their 20th anniversary as a band. With a new cover of the band, the new \u0026amp; improved recording, and the addition of two songs not previously available, the CD became a necessity for this long time Saint fan. The band stayed true to the original songs for the most part, and vocalist Josh Kramer shows he still had it after all those years. These familiar songs sound great with modern heavy production. The two new tracks, \"Reaper\" and \"Killers and the Destroyers,\" were written by Lynch\/Mahan in the very early 80's, and round out the album quite nicely. Who? Remember Extol? Remember Extol’s Burial (1998) and Undeceived (2000)? Christer Espevoll (guitars, ex-Extol) and David Husvik (drums, Extol) have had a reunion of sorts and they invited Liam Wilson (bass, Dillinger Escape Plan) and the incredibly talented Eleni Zafiriadou (vocals, Sea+Air) to the party. Progressive thrash death metal might just make a comeback thanks to this little gathering of musicians. If you can imagine a blending of the styles of the first 3 Extol releases with female vocals that aren’t quite as “black metal” sounding (but kinda close) as Peter Espevoll, than you should have a sonic picture of what Azusa have to offer. Even the cover artwork resembles the mighty Extol – Undeceived with the shrouded figure with face in shadow. I confess, I have not been as excited about a new extreme metal band since Becoming The Archetype – and that was a few too many years ago now.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSeriously, this isn’t an exact recreation of early Extol, but this is probably as close to that incarnation as I’ve heard in many years, if ever. I loved the self-titled Extol comeback album a few years ago, but these songs have a lot of the thrash speed and creative insanity and frenetic movement of those early Extol years. Perhaps that combustible force of unabashed shred partly accounts for the band name? Pentecostal frenzy was never this metal though (or maybe it was).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEleni has this inhuman way of shifting from the melodic to the harsh, yet all the while maintaining the intensity and clarity of word – her voice every bit as important to these songs as the instrumentalists. When she soars with the melodic she sounds a bit like Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia (“Fine Lines”). I think “Interstellar Islands” nicely exhibits these attributes, but her performance throughout is both captivating and inspirational. Christer’s guitars are as crisp and energetic as his early days with Extol, the chemistry with Husvik quite evident. Liam’s bass is locked-in tight and nicely placed in the mix – the rhythms here easily inspiring any metal drummer or bass player to greatness. When you listen to these songs, though, it is so fluid and sincere – like these guys\/gal are just sharing a cathartic experience of joy, aggression, thoughtful persuasion with the listener. There are no long instrumentally indulgent passages.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eLyrically, this material seems to confront the “heavy yoke” that we impose upon ourselves both physically and spiritually through fear and perhaps intimidation and infliction of guilt. The title track is just too good. “Heavy yoke\/The truth behind the lies\/Heavy on your soul.” The juxtaposition of the melodic chorus and harsh vocals with those driving guitars, bass and percussive precision is both convincing and convicting. “A spark is blown into flame\/Fire sweeps through your vacant heart.” “Spellbinder” would have to be another highlight musically and lyrically. “Eternal Echo” has the head-banging elements that would make for a great song in the live setting – a nice balance of riff-heavy metal and thrash. “Though shadows veil my eyes\/Your light surrounds me\/Back to the beginning again\/Drinking eternity.” And if that is not enough, “Iniquitous Spiritual Praxis” is a scathing thrash rant against “complacency in tradition.” (my interpretation) I mean, who writes lyrics like this anymore, “Baptized in a cocktail of iniquitous spiritual praxis?” I love it!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAt 34 quick minutes, it’s too short. With the average song length 3 minutes (and 2 songs just shy of the two minute mark) Heavy Yoke feels more like an old-fashioned demo\/promotional release than a full length feature. I can assure you, however, that every minute is well worth the price of admission as these songs make an instant, and lasting, impact. Not surprisingly, the sound\/production quality stands up to the Extol material. Still, some of these songs end somewhat abruptly, so this might be a bit of a teaser for some of the more progressive types who like things drawn out a bit more fully. It seems Heavy Yoke is testing the waters, so to speak, just skimming the surface of the potential that lies beneath. Yep, I’m hooked and eagerly look forward to more from this crew. It is this contrast that connects you with the struggles Mo Leverett has experienced in his life over the last few years. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe songs that are scaled back to a few instruments are the ones that really shine, such as “Watch and Pray.” It is a Neil Young inspired arrangement of soulful singing with a gentle guitar strum The song becomes very emotive when the soulful background vocals chime in. Leverett borrows the lyrics to an old hymn and creates what is probably the best song on the album. In fact, I really desire more of the flesh and bone songs on the album. Another such song found later in the album is, “The Ditch,” where all you hear is the strum of his guitar interacting with his staccato voice singing the lyrics. It is another gem on the album. Overall, I would like to hear more of the bare bones songs from Leverett it makes his guitar playing and voice shine more. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe fourth song is a rousing country anthem, “Like Hell Inside,” the first song Leverett states he wrote after the hurricane. I really enjoy the burn a hole in your pocket harmonica by Buddy Greene. The song is packed with energy and gets your foot to tapping. There are several more songs interwoven throughout the album that have the up tempo country blues fell to it. Then in 2000 or 2001 I heard the song \"Gimme\", which had me sold on Alice Cooper. I bought Brutal Planet. Later on I would buy Dragontown. Once I had Spotify, I started exploring more of Alice Cooper's music. I started listening to his older albums and I absolutely loved it. So I end up buying favorite one, which is \"Trash\". Although there is nothing trashy about this album. I love songs like Poison, Bed Of Nails, Spark In The Dark, and Why Trust You. He's had a lot of them too; Killer, Billion Dollar Babies, Welcome To My Nightmare, From The Inside, Dada, etc. The Last Temptation is a continuation of Welcome To My Nightmare, because it tells another story about Steven. The music's a little bit heavier but unfortunatly less theatrical compared to WTMN, and the story is almost as good. I haven't heard Alice Cooper Goes To Hell yet, so I can't compare it to that one. It's another one that has a story about Steven. Anyway, this might be the best rock CD from the 90's. Nirvana's Nevermind and David Bowie's Outside are really good, but they're grunge and industrial, so they don't count. The Last Temptation is one of those albums that you can play twice in a row without skipping any of the songs, and never get tired of it.
