Lady Soul was a pleasant surprise to listen to. You know you're going to get great soul grooves with Chain Of Fools and Since You've Been Gone, but what set this disc apart was unique versions of other people's music. I was not familiar with James Brown's Money Won't Change You; it sounds like pure Aretha to me. Curtis Mayfield's People Get Ready is given a more soulful rendition than Curtis' original version with The Impressions. The Rascals' Groovin keeps that floating, hippy kind of sound and adds some grit to it, making a sort of pop-funk stew. The one that didn't work for me was Ray Charles' Come Back Baby done up-tempo, but if you don't know Ray's version, you probably won't have a problem with it. Atlantic recordings always have great backing musicians, and that's certainly true here with great guitar work from Joe South, Bobby Womack, and Eric Clapton. Cissy Houston and The Sweet Inspirations doing background vocals doesn't hurt either. This disc is well worth whatever you pay for it.
