W.A.S.P. – Golgotha (*NEW-CD, 2018, Napalm Records) elite rock/metal!!!
I remember listening to WASP a few times in the 80s. At the time, I enjoyed their "hair metal" approach to music. However, song subject matter drove me away from them. Jump forward 25+ years. When I noted that their founder had discovered Christianity and began writing about it, I had to take another listen. These are powerful songs, both musically and lyrically. It has been a great surprise to indulge this album. If you, like me, always wished hair metal could be about the good and not just the bad, here is a refreshing, enjoyable reminder that all things are possible. This is very catchy music with a strong message. I will not give a full review of every song. However, there are a couple of standouts worth pointing out. Specifically, "The Eyes of the Maker" always causes me to pause. Scream is a great song. The title track is both the highlight of the album and is a perfect album closer as it looks into being one of the criminals hanging on the cross next to Christ. This may be the best coverage of that story in rock music I have heard. It is an amazing listen.
Simply put, Hair Metal meets Christianity - It's been done many times before, sometimes very well (Stryper of course stands out). However, this feels like true redemption for the band. That, in and of itself, makes this a special listen and definitely worth your time.
