WHEN CHRISTIAN ROCK DISCOVERED NEW WAVE

Remember when synthesizers, drum machines, and new-wave rhythms started finding their way into Christian rock? While much of the genre was still dominated by guitar-driven music and traditional pop arrangements, Crumbächer were doing something refreshingly different.

Led by singer, songwriter, and keyboardist Stephen Crumbächer, the band developed a sound built around inventive electronic arrangements, memorable melodies, and thoughtful lyrics. Their music embraced the adventurous spirit of contemporary new wave while retaining a distinctly Christian perspective.

From the energetic debut Incandescent (1985) to the science-fiction atmosphere of Escape from the Fallen Planet (1986) and the polished pop production of Thunder Beach (1987), these recordings document a fascinating musical evolution.

Girder Records has brought all three titles back in limited CD editions! And Boone's Overstock has something extra for collectors: a handful of original, factory-sealed Frontline Records vinyl copies from the 1980s. Details on all five editions are below.

1. INCANDESCENT (1985)

THE DEBUT THAT STARTED IT ALL!

Before Escape from the Fallen Planet and Thunder Beach, there was Incandescent.

Originally released in April 1985 through Broken Records, Crumbächer's debut introduced a band willing to explore the possibilities of synthesizers, electronic rhythms, and contemporary new-wave production. The songs combined memorable pop hooks with arrangements that were anything but ordinary for Christian music in the mid-1980s.

"Understudy," "Glowing in the Dark," "So Strange," and "Jamie" reveal the band's early creativity. "Jamie," identified as the first song Stephen Crumbächer ever wrote, remains an important part of their story.

Now available on physical CD for the first time! The Girder Records edition features remastered audio, an 8-page booklet, and a bonus version of "It Don't Matter" from the 1984 What's Shakin' compilation.

2. ESCAPE FROM THE FALLEN PLANET (1986)

THE SCI-FI NEW-WAVE CLASSIC!

In 1986, Crumbächer took their music into another dimension!

Originally released through Frontline Records, Escape from the Fallen Planet pushed the band's electronic ambitions further, blending science-fiction imagery, sophisticated synthesizer arrangements, and memorable songwriting into one of their most distinctive recordings.

From "Solo Flight" and "Crashlanded (In Another Time Zone)" to "Identical Twins," "Royal Command Performance," and "Interstellar Satellite," the album takes listeners on a musical journey filled with imaginative sounds and thoughtful lyrical ideas.

Girder Records celebrates the album's 40th anniversary with a special collector's edition. The remastered CD includes a 16-page booklet, historical timeline, photographs, lyrics, a premium collector sleeve, and a limited collector card. The bonus recording "Alma Mater (Acappella)" expands the album to ten tracks.

3. THUNDER BEACH (1987)

CRUMBÄCHER'S POLISHED SYNTH-POP CLASSIC!

By 1987, Crumbächer had developed their sound into something even more polished and melodic.

Originally released through Frontline Records, Thunder Beach finds the band embracing bright synthesizers, electronic rhythms, and carefully layered arrangements that defined late-1980s pop production.

Songs such as "Backyard Changes," "Once in a Heartbreak," "Great Little Dancer," and the title track demonstrate the band's ability to combine accessible melodies with creative production. "Middle of a Miracle," "Terra Firma," and "Only Time" further showcase their songwriting strengths.

The Girder Records collector's edition celebrates the album's approaching 40th anniversary in 2027. Released in 2026, this special edition features remastered audio, a 12-page booklet, historical timeline, premium collector sleeve, and limited-edition collector card.
