🎸 The Album That Changed Everything
Deliverance had already announced themselves as a serious force with their self-titled debut. But when Weapons of Our Warfare arrived in 1990, everything came together.
George Ochoa had joined the band on guitar, and Jimmy P. Brown II and company delivered an album that was heavier, more developed, more ambitious, and remarkably confident. Brown's precision and power as a rhythm guitarist drove the record, while the interplay between Brown and Ochoa produced some absolutely ferocious guitar work.
The songwriting had grown as well. Longer, multi-section compositions hinted at some of the progressive territory Deliverance would explore later without sacrificing the speed and aggression that made the band so exciting in the first place.
“Supplication.” “This Present Darkness.” “Flesh & Blood.” “Slay the Wicked.” “Greetings of Death.” “If We Faint Not.” And, of course, the unforgettable title track. These weren't simply songs on another Christian metal record. For an entire generation of fans, they became anthems.
📺 “Weapons of Our Warfare” Breaks Through
The title track would take Deliverance somewhere few could have imagined. The video for “Weapons of Our Warfare” became the first Christian metal video to receive airplay on MTV and spent twelve consecutive weeks among the top three on the network's Headbanger's Ball countdown.
Then, in 1999, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich hosted a program in which he named “Weapons of Our Warfare” among his Top 10 metal videos of all time.
Decades later, the album's reputation has endured. Weapons of Our Warfare ranked #3 on Christian Metal Realm's Top 100 Christian Metal Albums and #16 on Angelic Warlord's Top 50 Christian Metal & Hard Rock Albums of the Nineties.
