FROM CHAGALL GUEVARA TO PASSAFIST: THE 1994 INDUSTRIAL ROCK CULT CLASSIC RETURNS ON LIMITED EDITION CD & VINYL!
Dave Perkins. Lynn Nichols. John Elliott. Industrial rock, biting satire, and an album that refused to follow the rules. PASSAFIST IS BACK!
Some albums defy categorization. Others seem determined to destroy the categories altogether. PASSAFIST belongs firmly in the second group.
Originally released on R.E.X. Records in 1994, Passafist brought together Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols of Chagall Guevara with John Elliott of Dessau, creating one of the most unusual and adventurous recordings to emerge from the 1990s alternative underground.
Now, more than three decades later, Retroactive Records brings this industrial-rock cult classic back in two limited collector's editions: APOCALYPTIC YELLOW VINYL (ONLY 200 COPIES!) and a DELUXE CD EDITION (ONLY 300 COPIES!).
🎸 FROM CHAGALL GUEVARA TO INDUSTRIAL-ROCK EXPERIMENTATION
Following their work in Chagall Guevara, Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols were hardly finished pushing musical boundaries.
The seeds of Passafist were planted when Perkins wrote "Christ of the Nuclear Age" for a proposed film soundtrack. John Elliott brought electronic drums and synthesizer bass into the recording, transforming the song into something unexpected. When R.E.X. Records heard the results, the label encouraged Perkins to develop a full album.
Nichols joined the project, and additional contributions from Michael Saleem and Mustafa Abdul-Aleem of Afrikan Dreamland added powerful percussion and distinctive rhythmic textures.
The resulting album was a fascinating collision of distorted guitars, industrial electronics, funk, sampling, and alternative rock. Passafist wasn't trying to sound like the next Chagall Guevara album. It was exploring entirely different territory.
🎵 SEVEN SONGS THAT STILL SOUND UNCONVENTIONAL
Passafist combines musical experimentation with social commentary, satire, and a healthy disregard for expectations.
"Glock" confronts violence with abrasive intensity. "Lov-E900" takes aim at the commercialization of sexuality, while "Appliance Alliance" examines technology's growing influence over everyday life.
The band's reworking of the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" gives that classic an industrial-rock transformation.
And then there's "The Dr. Is In (Or How I Learned to Worry and Start Missing the Cold War)." Clocking in at nearly eleven minutes, this extraordinary closing track incorporates dialogue from Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, combining Cold War satire with electronic experimentation, heavy guitars, and unexpected musical detours.
More than thirty years later, the album remains provocative, unpredictable, and unmistakably Passafist.
📖 EXCLUSIVE 2026 LINER NOTES FROM DAVE PERKINS!
One of the most compelling features of these new collector's editions is "Passafist Rearview," an exclusive essay written by Dave Perkins in 2026.
Perkins takes listeners behind the scenes of the album's creation, recalling its unlikely origins, his collaborations with Lynn Nichols and John Elliott, and the recording techniques that helped shape the finished album.
He also revisits the process of incorporating Dr. Strangelove dialogue into "The Dr. Is In," offering a firsthand perspective on an album that remains one of the more unusual projects in his extensive musical career.
The CD edition features a 12-page booklet with expanded historical material, including more than 700 words of Perkins' firsthand reflections and an additional historical introduction.
The vinyl edition includes a two-sided illustrated insert featuring Perkins' exclusive essay alongside additional album artwork and information.
