🥤 Atomic Opera – Gospel Cola
Originally released by Metal Blade Records in 2000, Atomic Opera's Gospel Cola may be the perfect example of why this Houston band has always been so difficult to categorize—and why their music continues to attract listeners decades later. Progressive but accessible, heavy without being relentlessly metallic, deeply melodic yet structurally adventurous, Gospel Cola sounds like a band completely comfortable following its own musical instincts.
This was a new chapter for Atomic Opera. Joining singer, songwriter, guitarist, and cellist Frank Hart were Kemper Crabb, Ryan Birsinger, and John Simmons, creating a lineup capable of taking the band's already eclectic sound even further. Crabb alone contributes mandolin, dulcimer, recorder, bouzouki, harmonica, and ocarina, while Birsinger adds bass and Chapman Stick and Simmons brings drums and percussion. Hammond organ, Rhodes, and pipe organ expand the musical palette even further.
The result is an album filled with contrasts. Airy passages and memorable melodies can suddenly give way to surging guitars and heavier progressive undercurrents. Folk and string textures weave through hard rock arrangements. Vocal harmonies coexist with unconventional instrumentation. Songs develop naturally rather than simply following predictable verse/chorus formulas.
And then there are the lyrics. Gospel Cola is unmistakably rooted in Christian faith, but Atomic Opera approaches that faith with intelligence, wit, conviction, and a willingness to challenge religious clichés and hypocrisy. The opening “Jesus Junk” sets the tone immediately, taking aim at the commercialization and trivialization of Christianity while never abandoning the faith behind the critique.
From there the album goes deeper. “Winterland,” “Reiah Discerns the Times,” “Silence,” “Muse,” “Love Is As Strong As Death,” and “The Circle Is Closed” explore faith and human experience from very different angles, while the powerful “Malediction” brings some of the album's heaviest guitars and most confrontational subject matter. Throughout Gospel Cola, Atomic Opera refuses simplistic answers in favor of music that asks the listener to think.
That combination of musical depth and spiritual substance is at the heart of the record. There are unmistakable connections to the melodic progressive world of King's X and Galactic Cowboys, but Gospel Cola never sounds like an imitation. Atomic Opera's unusual instrumentation, Hart's songwriting, Crabb's folk influence, and the band's willingness to move from delicate passages to muscular progressive hard rock give the album an identity entirely its own.
Recorded at Digital Penguin Studio in Houston, Gospel Cola was produced by Frank Hart and Atomic Opera, engineered and mixed by Ryan Birsinger, and originally mastered by Bob Boyd at Ambient Digital. For this special Retroactive Records Metal Icon Series edition, the album has been remastered by Rob Colwell and features restored artwork and design by Scott Waters / NoLifeTilMetal.
Limited to only 300 copies, Gospel Cola is a welcome return for an album that remains heavy on melody, deep in message, unpredictable in execution, and unmistakably Atomic Opera.
