SFC's CHRIS COOPER / SUPER C (Sup the Chemist)
#1 Christian Rapper of All-Time
(Rapzilla)
If we’re all standing on the shoulders of giants, we are most definitely standing on the shoulders of Sup The Chemist of SFC (Soldiers For Christ). In addition to his own artistic contributions, of beats and rhymes, his blazing of trails helped to build an infrastructure and economy that all who are involved today continue to benefit from. He also continually introduced listeners to other artists, such as the Tunnel Rats and Gospel Gangstaz to name a few.
If Christian hip-hop were to attempt to pinpoint a founder, it may as well be Sup the Chemist. His unrivaled influence isn’t why he’s on the list, though. He is the whole package and was ahead of his time artistically.

ABOUT THE ALBUM
Before Christian hip-hop found its mainstream voice, there was A Saved Man (In The Jungle)—a raw, fearless, and unapologetically bold statement that shattered expectations and kicked open the doors for a new wave of faith-fueled rap. Originally released in 1990 on BAI/Broken Records, this long out-of-print classic remains a pivotal moment in hip-hop history, merging street-level authenticity with an uncompromising message of redemption.
SFC (Soldiers for Christ) wasn’t just another rap act—they were pioneers. At a time when hip-hop barely had a foothold in the Christian music world, SFC stood alongside the likes of ETW and pre-Free at Last dc Talk, proving that rap had a place in faith-based music. Led by Chris Cooper—better known as Super C, later Soup the Chemist, and eventually Sup the Chemist—SFC brought a level of credibility unmatched by their contemporaries. With razor-sharp lyricism and beats that stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the best of the era, A Saved Man (In The Jungle) blended hardcore hip-hop with jazz and reggae influences, drawing inspiration from Public Enemy, N.W.A., and Ice Cube.
This groundbreaking album features guest MCs Dynamic Twins, M.C. Peace, and Poetic Lee, adding even more firepower to an already explosive record. The production, mixed and engineered by Gene Eugene (Adam Again/Lost Dogs), weaves in elements of funk, gospel, and comedy, with samples ranging from Saturday Night Live’s Church Lady to Adam Again’s signature grooves. The track "Can’t Wait" even nods to classic rock, incorporating Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Down on the Corner into its infectious hook.
Now, for the first time in decades, A Saved Man (In The Jungle) returns in a Legends Remastered CD edition, meticulously remastered by Rob Colwell. This 2025 Retroactive Records release is limited to just 300 copies and comes housed in a jewel case with a 12-page booklet featuring lyrics. With its iconic cover stylized to read both SAVED and SLAVED, this album continues to challenge, inspire, and move listeners.
Sup the Chemist once told CCM Magazine that his mission was to “reach drug sellers, club hoppers, and other people you wouldn’t find sitting down and listening to a church choir.” More than 30 years later, that mission still resonates. Whether you’re revisiting this classic or discovering it for the first time, A Saved Man (In The Jungle) demands to be heard—loud and unfiltered. Don’t sleep on this reissue, because once it’s gone, it’s gone. For fans of Public Enemy, N.W.A., Sup the Chemist, E.T.W., Ice Cube.

SFC – A Saved Man (In The Jungle) REVIEW
Way back in 1991, my ol’ buddy and fellow music scribe Jamie Lee Rake wrote about SFC in a publication we both contributed to:
“Soldiers For Christ (SFC) comin’ at ya with the beat, layin’ down some def grooves. No Kids on the Block schlock—this is hardcore street rap, b-boy.”
If you knew Rake, you’d know that’s exactly how he ad-libbed. Pretty fly for a white guy.
To frame SFC properly, you’ve got to understand the landscape of Christian hip-hop in the ‘80s. Early pioneers ranged from MC Sweet to, believe it or not, the early days of MC Hammer. But by 1991, three names stood at the top of the Xian hip-hop world: dc Talk, ETW, and SFC. Each carved out a distinct space within the scene, but SFC brought the most raw, street-level hip-hop cred.
SFC—comprising DJ Dove and Chris Cooper (aka Super C, later Soup the Chemist, finally Sup the Chemist)—had authenticity in spades. Sup eventually earned the title Grandfather of Christian Hip-Hop, which is no small honor.
But let’s not overlook the youthful boldness of A Saved Man (In The Jungle). SFC wasn’t just about beats and rhymes—they were intentional about their faith. Sup’s father had deep ties to Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam, and his conversion to Christianity fueled his passion for using hip-hop as a tool to reach those caught in the grips of radicalized religion and street life. Inspired by Public Enemy, N.W.A., and Ice Cube, SFC took things further, weaving jazz and reggae influences into their sound—a signature move that set them apart.
Across twenty tracks, this album is packed with creative sampling, comedic interludes, and straight-up fire. Highlights? Plenty.
- "A Saved Man (In The Jungle)" – Yes, that’s an Axl Rose sample you hear.
- "KACR I" & "KACR II" – Hilarious call-outs to Christian radio stations that wouldn’t touch Xian hip-hop.
- "Long Way" – Gospel vocals so hot they could melt wax.
- "Freestyle" – A nod to Jamaican riddim culture.
- "Can’t Wait" – Features the unmistakable intro to CCR’s Down on the Corner—and it works.
- "A Word From Our Pastor" – Samples SNL’s Church Lady and an Adam Again guitar riff. (Yeah, they went there.)
Have I enticed your eardrums yet?
This is an album meant for headphones. A record that begs to be played loud. If you can drop the needle on it, even better—give your speakers a proper workout.
This is one crazy good album.

REVIEWS
What we have here is SFC's 2nd release through Broken records...back when hip hop had creative production and when lyrics had a point. This was released back when the hip hop world was dominated by political/nationalist hip hop on one hand and by gangsta/hardcore on the other. On the HOLY hip hop side of the era...you the likes of Soldiers For Christ(Super C, DJ Dove, Poetic Lee), this album being one of the greatest holy hip hop releases of all time in my book. Long out of print, yet worth the investment...A CLASSIC.
