About the Album
Mortal’s debut Lusis introduced listeners to something unmistakably different—dark, immersive, and emotionally charged. When Fathom arrived in 1993, it didn’t just continue that trajectory; it expanded it dramatically.
At a time when much of the Christian rock and metal scene leaned toward traditional guitar-driven hard rock, Fathom pushed into unexplored territory. Mortal blended industrial textures, electronic programming, sampling, and angular guitar work with haunting vocals and rhythm-driven songwriting. Long before these elements became common in alternative and mainstream rock, Mortal was already using them to shape a sound that felt futuristic, unsettling, and deeply compelling.
Tracks like “Rift,” “Godspeed,” and “Alive & Awake” showcase an album that thrives on contrast—aggression and atmosphere, melody and distortion, precision and chaos—creating a listening experience that remains striking decades later.
This 2017/2018 Retroactive Records reissue was fully remastered by J. Powell at Steinhaus, delivering the most powerful and detailed presentation of Fathom to date. Due to the album’s length and dynamic range, it is properly presented as a 2-LP vinyl set, housed in an expanded jacket with an insert that provides both lyrics and historical context.
Produced by Terry Taylor (Daniel Amos) and engineered by Gene Eugene (Adam Again), Fathom also features guest appearances from Jeff Bellew, Mark Salomon (The Crucified / Stavesacre), and Andy Prickett (The Prayer Chain).
This release marks the first time Fathom has ever been available on vinyl, and with only 300 copies pressed, it is a must-have for collectors and fans of innovative alternative and industrial-leaning rock.
Recommended for fans of: Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, and forward-thinking, hook-driven alternative music.
