WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT TAPE HEAD......
That record (Tape Head), Mr. Bulbous, Manic Moonlight....we...made those records together, wrote together and that's how those records came about. And that's kind of a nice period for me - to think just the three of us can do that. They are three of my favorite records.
(from King's X: An Oral History) Jerry Gaskill (King's X drummer)
With their latest album, Tape Head, King's X stick with their strengths, those being their complex vocal harmonies and incredible guitar tones....The first three songs on the album, "Groove Machine," "Fade," and "Ono," are nothing short of spectacular.
PhantomTollbooth.org
While the 1-2 punch of ‘Groove Machine’ and ‘Fade’ are the most immediate and catchy things on the album, the slow-burning charm of the rest of the record shines through eventually with ‘Little Bit of Soul’ being a standout track and the joyous 'World' providing a nice counterpoint to the rest of the album.
SputnikMusic.com Reviews
I think it's ("Groove Machine") my favorite King's X song. It's the purest King's X music we can create.
(from King's X: An Oral History) Doug Pinnick (King's X vocalist/bass)
"Ono is just one of my favorite King's X songs of all-time. When the chorus kicks in, it sounds like the world is gonna end. It's such a really cool emotive feeling, dynamic song."
Martin Popoff (Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles)
"Groove Machine - what a monster that blows your mind, it's groovy, pulsating, heavy with big riffs..."
Pete Pardo (Rock & Metal critic/reviewer)
ABOUT THE ALBUM
The band's 1998 magnum opus, "Groove Machine" launches the album like a rocket ship on it's way to outer space! With grooves so heavy, Tape Head has been known to cause instantaneous kryptonic drooling! For many, this album is a triumphant return to the classic King's X sound, while still exploring new territory for a band unwilling to stay the same, and thankfully so! The album flows with the perfect mix of heavy groove and melodic sensibility, with no shreds of the early prog-ish King's X sound. The songwriting is excellent on this album, as expected. The musicianship is elite, with perfectly placed guitar fills, basslines, and of course the signature vocal harmonies. Can it get any better? This is classic King's X with no restrictions, no producers, and no record labels driving them for the next radio hit. This is straight up King's X, very neat, and it goes down ultra-smooth. Indeed - this is top shelf stuff. Compared to Ear Candy (also brilliant), Tape Head is a monolithic slab of epic proportions. Now the album get's the deluxe Gold Disc treatment with an expanded booklet with lyrics and additional band pics. Also included is the Japan-only bonus track, "Two." And, every CD comes with an exclusive King's X foil-stamped collector's card! Indeed - it's time to upgrade the stereo in the car - and turn it UP! Welcome to the GROOVE MACHINE!

I have to say I love PCHMB. In fact for me it wasn't even a "grower." I took to it right from the get go. It's maybe my 2nd favorite KX album after Gretchen.
ProgArchives.com Reviews
Ty played the lead on the song ("She's Gone Away") - just to have a scratch track where the lead was. But the one take lead was so good, we wouldn't let him re-do it. And, it's probably one of the best leads I've ever heard him do.
(from King's X: An Oral History) Doug Pinnick (lead vocalist, King's X)
I remember coming up with the most unpredictable chord progression ever, and then working with Doug on making a melody.....I remember we did whatever we had to to get the line down.... But it turned out being super-cool when it finally clicked.
(from King's X: An Oral History) Ty Tabor (guitarist, King's X)
Ty's shining moment comes in "She's Gone Away," which contains quite possibly the finest King's X guitar solo ever committed to tape. Ty's soaring tones, powered by his new signature-model Yamaha guitar, have never sounded better. Jerry has long been the unsung hero of King's X. Here, with his poetic interludes, he finally gets his chance to take the forefront Phantom Tollbooth Reviews
ABOUT THE ALBUM
Please Come Home...Mr. Bulbous album title was selected because the band was convinced Gretchen Goes....was a terrible album name that worked out pretty well, so the band went with PCH...MB and decided the title means nothing, or it meant everything. Once again, the band was writing the album together in the studio, and the guys hit some real high moments. At Brutal Planet Records, we remember being less than enamored with this album when it released. But 20+ years later, we dare say the album has aged better than any album we have ever heard. Songs like "Fish Bowl Man," "Julia,", "She's Gone Away," and the unforgettable, "Charlie Sheen" (not actually about the actor, really) are some of the most exquisite tracks ever to grace a King's X album. The album is nothing less than pure, rock and roll brilliance from a band no longer trying to be a commercial success, but simply creating music that reflects their hearts and souls. How much more can a band offer it's fans? Stretching themselves on this album more than any other, they went outside the box and they created a masterpiece together, from scratch. Now the album gets the deluxe Gold Disc treatment with an expanded booklet with lyrics and additional band pics. And, every CD comes with an exclusive King's X foil-stamped collector's card!

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT MANIC MOONLIGHT.....

(from King's X: An Oral History) Jerry Gaskill (King's X drummer)
After the relatively eccentric Please Come Home...Mr. Bulbous, King's X returned with the most confidently organic and groove-based record of their career. Manic Moonlight, the Texas trio's ninth album, is the sound of a band who has vented their demons and come to terms with themselves. ALLMUSIC.COM
Exclaim! writes that "all the requisite solid performances, chunky grooves, flashy guitar work and beautifully realized vocal harmonies are here.
What this album does so well is manage to be so musically captivating, the relatively silly lyrics in some places come as an after thought...the band doesn't lose it's musical prowess with Manic Moonlight. SputnikMusic.com
ABOUT THE ALBUM
The 2001 third album in a trilogy of self-produced albums on Metal Blade Records - the band was tired of chasing the big-time and decided they would not bring in demos, but instead write the album from start to finish AS A BAND. Manic Moonlight is the result! King's X has never wanted to be a typical band, and this holds true for their ninth album. The arrangements on Manic Moonlight are progressive and jazzy with clever hooks that might require a few listens to sink in--but after that they become irresistible. There's also more of a funk influence here, with album opener "Believe" (about Doug's struggle for self-acceptance) setting the tone with a fine groove with the song being another track of super-tight riffs stopping and starting in perfect time, over and over again. "Skeptical Winds" explores the style more deeply with touches of R&B and soul, and the heavy bass line coupled with hard-rock crunch on "Vegetable" is classic King's X. The Gold Disc also includes the Japan-only long version bonus track of "Vegetable" in addition to the Japan-only long version bonus track of "Believe." "Static" experiments with dark ambient rhythms and odd samples, becoming a wall of metallic noise and screaming guitars. The wonderful lush harmonies that have been a King's X trademark are present on the melodic "Jenna" and the dreamy, uplifting "False Alarm," which stand strong next to the album's harder moments such as "Yeah" and title track. It's another fine album from this very talented and underrated band. Now the album get's the deluxe Gold Disc treatment with an expanded booklet with lyrics and additional band pics. And, every CD comes with an exclusive King's X foil-stamped collector's card!
