⚡ ABOUT THE ALBUM
After years away, The Swirling Eddies returned in 2007 with The Midget, The Speck And The Molecule, an album every bit as strange, funny, musically adventurous, and unexpectedly thoughtful as longtime listeners could hope. Terry Scott Taylor once again uses the Eddies as a vehicle for ideas that can move from absurdity to genuine reflection without warning, this time wrapping them in some of the hardest-rocking music the band had recorded while leaving plenty of room for psychedelic detours and experimental twists.
Much of the album circles around success and failure—and the uncomfortable possibility that the difference between them depends entirely on perspective. “Giants In The Land” looks at aging musicians still playing their hearts out while time inevitably takes its toll, while the hilariously titled “Medley Of Our Hit” turns the Eddies' famously warped sense of humor back on themselves and their audience. “My Cardboard Box” similarly finds humor in the less glamorous realities of life as an aging singer/songwriter. Beneath the jokes is a surprisingly thoughtful album about getting older, creating art, expectations, disappointment, ego, faith, and continuing to make music whether or not the world rewards you for it.
Musically, The Midget, The Speck And The Molecule moves comfortably between muscular alternative rock and stranger psychedelic territory. “Salton Sea” and “Madonna Inn” provide some of the album's more atmospheric moments, while the title track and closing “This Is The Title / The Old Hitchhiker” demonstrate that the Eddies' appetite for peculiar imagery and musical left turns remains fully intact. The result sounds unmistakably connected to Daniel Amos and Terry Taylor's larger musical universe without simply becoming another DA record under a different name.
The album features Camarillo Eddy, Spot, Berger Roy Al, Derry Air, Judy Ism, Newt York Newt York, and Picky Swelly, with a special guest appearance from Eddie DeGarmo of DeGarmo & Key. All songs were written by Terry Scott Taylor, and the album was produced by Camarillo Eddy and The Swirling Eddies. For longtime Eddies fans, this wasn't simply a nostalgic return—it was proof that the band's peculiar mixture of intelligence, irreverence, spirituality, satire, and adventurous rock still had plenty of life left in it.
