⚡ ABOUT THE ALBUM
Originally released in 1981, ¡Alarma! represents one of the great turning points in the history of Daniel Amos. The band that had begun its career rooted in country rock had already demonstrated a willingness to evolve, but ¡Alarma! was a dramatic leap forward. New wave, art rock, angular guitars, pop melodies, satire, social commentary, and Terry Taylor’s increasingly ambitious songwriting collided in an album that sounded radically different from the group’s earlier work and established the creative direction Daniel Amos would pursue throughout the decade.
More importantly, ¡Alarma! became the opening chapter of the extraordinary four-part ¡Alarma! Chronicles, followed by Doppelgänger, Vox Humana, and Fearful Symmetry. Songs including “Central Theme,” “¡Alarma!,” “Big Time/Big Deal,” “My Room,” “Cloak & Dagger,” “Through The Speakers,” “Endless Summer,” and “Walls Of Doubt” helped establish a new Daniel Amos identity—smart, challenging, playful, musically adventurous, and increasingly difficult to categorize. What had once been a roots-oriented band was now operating on the leading edge of alternative Christian rock.
This Deluxe 2-CD Collector’s Edition provides a remarkably deep look into that transformation. Disc One presents the complete 16-track album in newly remastered form, while Disc Two adds 21 bonus tracks drawn from demos, outtakes, alternate mixes, instrumental recordings, and other archival material. The bonus disc reaches back to the three Mainstream demos—“Little Things,” “Off My Mind,” and “As Long As I Live”—before moving into rare ¡Alarma!-era recordings including “No Spaceship,” “Out Of Town,” and “Only One.” Demo and alternate versions of familiar album tracks reveal how songs developed before reaching their finished forms.
One of the set’s most unusual additions is a nearly seven-minute reading of The ¡Alarma! Chronicles Part 1 by Malcolm Wild. Alternate mixes of “Props,” “Shedding The Mortal Coil,” “Ghost Of The Heart,” and “Big Time/Big Deal” provide further variations on the original sessions, while instrumental versions of “¡Alarma!” and “Colored By” offer another way to hear the arrangements beneath Terry Taylor’s vocals.
The physical presentation is equally impressive. This Born Twice Records/Stunt Records edition comes in a 6-panel digipak with a massive 28-page full-color booklet containing lyrics, rare and previously unseen photographs, a center spread of ¡Alarma! memorabilia, and the complete text of Terry Taylor’s The ¡Alarma! Chronicles Part 1. With 37 tracks across two CDs, extensive archival material, and deluxe packaging, this is an essential edition of the album that launched one of Daniel Amos’ most creative periods.
