ABOUT THE ALBUM

Nearly three decades after Detritus seemingly disappeared, the Bristol, UK metal band returned with an album that did something far more interesting than simply recreate its past.

Myths is the first new Detritus studio album since 1993’s If But For One—and it sounds like a band that spent those intervening years becoming heavier, darker, stranger, and more adventurous.

Detritus first emerged at the tail end of the original thrash explosion with 1990’s Perpetual Defiance, followed by If But For One in 1993. Both albums earned the band a dedicated underground following, with Detritus developing a reputation for taking the fundamentals of thrash metal in increasingly unconventional directions.

Myths takes that adventurous spirit considerably further.

This is progressive metal built upon a thrash foundation: crushing mid-paced riffs collide with melody, melancholy, atmospheric passages, unconventional structures, and sudden shifts between delicacy and brute force. Rather than simply racing forward, Detritus allows these songs to breathe, expand, and develop.

At the center is vocalist and bassist Mark Broomhead, also known for his work with Seventh Angel. His distinctive vocal delivery gives Myths an immediately recognizable personality, backed by Andy Neal on guitars, Andy Bright on drums, Paul Newington Wise on guitars, and Michael Bryzak on guitars.

Following the introductory “Myth Of Redemptive Violence,” “Bright Black” establishes the album’s massive sound with pounding rhythms, angular guitars, and an unusual melodic edge. “Tale Of Sadness” demonstrates another side of the band, balancing heaviness with melancholy and emotional weight.

Then comes “Exoria.”

At nearly nine minutes, it is the album’s sprawling centerpiece, moving through contrasting textures, crushing riffs, melody, atmosphere, and progressive twists. The six-plus-minute “Bloodstained Glass” continues the album’s expansive approach before “Pharisee” and “The Game” drive toward the enormous closing statement, “Forever Soldier.”

Mainstream metal publication Blabbermouth took notice. Reviewer Dom Lawson praised the album as “one of the most original and striking thrash records to be released in a long time,” noting that the reunited Detritus had moved beyond conventional thrash into something much harder to categorize. His review ultimately described Myths as “a simply stunning piece of work.”

That is precisely what makes Myths such a compelling comeback. Detritus could have returned after 28 years and attempted to reproduce 1990. Instead, the band took the creativity that distinguished its early recordings and pushed it somewhere new.

Delicate and brutal, melodic and crushing, familiar yet unpredictable, Myths is the sound of Detritus returning on its own terms.
