🎸 ABOUT THE ALBUM — PASSAFIST
ONLY 300 CDs! JEWEL CASE WITH 12-PAGE BOOKLET! OVER 900 WORDS OF HISTORICAL LINER NOTES, INCLUDING EXCLUSIVE 2026 REFLECTIONS FROM DAVE PERKINS!
Some albums defy categorization. Others seem determined to destroy the categories altogether. PASSAFIST belongs firmly in the second group.
Originally released by R.E.X. Records in 1994, Passafist emerged from the aftermath of Chagall Guevara, bringing together musicians whose wildly different backgrounds produced one of the most unconventional albums of the decade. Guitarists Dave Perkins and Lynn Nichols, already known for their work with Chagall Guevara, joined forces with John Elliott of Dessau to create a recording that blurred the boundaries between industrial rock, alternative music, funk, and experimental noise.
Additional contributions from Michael Saleem and Mustafa Abdul-Aleem of Afrikan Dreamland brought powerful percussion and rhythmic textures to the project. The resulting seven-song album combined distorted guitars, electronic beats, sampling, unconventional vocals, and darkly satirical songwriting into something that sounded unlike virtually anything else in the 1994 alternative underground.
The project began with "Christ of the Nuclear Age," a song Perkins originally developed for a proposed film soundtrack. Working with Elliott, he combined vintage guitar sounds with electronic drums and synthesizer bass. The recording caught the attention of R.E.X. Records, which encouraged Perkins to develop an entire album in that direction. Perkins brought Nichols aboard, and the musicians began exploring just how far they could push their unconventional musical ideas.
Perkins and Nichols adopted the fictional identities of Waco and Reno Caruso, adding another layer of mischief to an album already filled with musical surprises. Behind those playful aliases were two experienced musicians who knew how to write powerful guitar hooks but had little interest in following a conventional rock formula. Elliott's electronic programming and industrial sensibilities helped transform those ideas into something considerably stranger.
From the hypnotic atmosphere of "Emmanuel Chant" to the abrasive industrial assault of "Glock," Passafist explored contemporary culture through an unusual combination of humor, social criticism, and musical experimentation. "Lov-E900" satirized commercialized sexuality, while "Appliance Alliance" offered a remarkably perceptive look at technology's growing influence over everyday life.
The band's explosive interpretation of the Rolling Stones' "Street Fighting Man" demonstrates how naturally classic guitar-driven rock could coexist with Passafist's industrial experimentation. And then comes the album's extraordinary finale: "The Dr. Is In (Or How I Learned to Worry and Start Missing the Cold War)." Inspired by Stanley Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove, the nearly eleven-minute composition incorporates film dialogue, industrial rhythms, unexpected musical detours, distorted guitars, and biting nuclear-age satire.
THE 2027 RETROACTIVE RECORDS CD COLLECTOR'S EDITION: Retroactive Records brings Passafist back to collectors in a LEGENDS REMASTERED EDITION, STRICTLY LIMITED TO 300 CDs. Housed in a traditional JEWEL CASE WITH A 12-PAGE BOOKLET, this edition gives the album the historical presentation it deserves, combining extensive liner notes with lyrics, credits, and artwork.
OVER 900 WORDS OF HISTORICAL LINER NOTES! The CD booklet features two complementary pieces that explore the album from different perspectives. A new historical introduction provides the background, examining the aftermath of Chagall Guevara, the musicians who came together to create Passafist, and the unlikely combination of guitar-driven rock and industrial experimentation that defined the recording.
THEN DAVE PERKINS TELLS THE STORY HIMSELF! His exclusive 2026 essay, Passafist Rearview, contributes more than 700 words of firsthand recollections. Perkins describes the proposed film soundtrack that inspired "Christ of the Nuclear Age," the enthusiastic response from R.E.X. Records, his decision to recruit Lynn Nichols, and the indispensable role John Elliott played in shaping the album's sound.
Perkins also recalls the painstaking process of incorporating dialogue from Dr. Strangelove using two-inch recording tape, the influence of Mick Jones' Big Audio Dynamite, and the creative thinking behind individual songs. His reflections offer an unusually personal look at how an album this adventurous could emerge from a group of musicians willing to follow their instincts into unfamiliar territory.
More than three decades after its original release, Passafist remains provocative, unpredictable, unsettling, frequently funny, and entirely its own creation. Its combination of industrial electronics, muscular guitar rock, satire, and rhythmic experimentation continues to reward adventurous listeners.
For collectors who remember the original R.E.X. Records release, this edition offers a chance to revisit a fascinating chapter in alternative rock history. For listeners discovering Passafist for the first time, it's an invitation to experience seven songs that still refuse to fit comfortably into any conventional musical category.
With ONLY 300 CDs PRESSED, a 12-PAGE BOOKLET, and extensive historical liner notes featuring Dave Perkins' exclusive recollections, this is a collector's edition worthy of one of the 1990s alternative underground's most unusual recordings.
FOR FANS OF: Circle of Dust, Nine Inch Nails, Ministry, Chagall Guevara, Dessau, and industrial-era alternative rock.
