A Hill to Die Upon – Omens
About the Album
Years of relentless touring and legendary appearances at the Cornerstone Festival established A Hill to Die Upon as one of the most formidable forces in Christian extreme metal. That reputation exploded in 2009 with the release of their debut album, Infinite Titanic Immortal, which quickly became a landmark release and was voted into Heaven’s Metal Magazine’s Top 100 Christian Metal Albums of All Time just one year later.
Building on that momentum, the band returned with their powerful sophomore release, Omens. The album was recorded at Girder Mode Studios and engineered by Rex Carroll (Whitecross), then mixed and mastered in Sweden by Erik Tordsson (Crimson Moonlight), giving Omens a production pedigree worthy of its ambition and intensity.
Musically, Omens delivers a fierce blend of war-metal, blackened death metal, and Eastern-tinged atmospheres. Adam’s vocals are hoarse, commanding, and prophetic—evoking the voice of an Old Testament herald calling down judgment and hope in equal measure. Michael’s drumming is relentless, driven by rapid double-bass patterns, blast beats, and precision snare work. Elisha’s guitar work moves seamlessly between tremolo picking and crushing death-metal riffing, punctuated by solos that are both technical and tastefully placed.
The defining word for Omens is majestic. Beneath its brutality lies a carefully crafted sense of melody and movement, with songs that ebb and flow rather than simply overwhelm. The production enhances this balance, allowing the album to remain both punishing and immersive.
Omens stands as a clear statement of maturity—an album that proves extreme metal can be intelligent, emotional, and spiritually weighty without losing its edge. Within just three years, A Hill to Die Upon released two albums that demonstrated blackened death metal does not need to devolve into parody, but can instead be powerful, thoughtful, and devastating.
For fans of extreme metal, Omens is essential listening. Even those who normally shy away from brutal music may find themselves drawn in by its atmosphere, depth, and craftsmanship.
