ABOUT THE ALBUM

In 1987, Whitecross exploded onto the Christian metal scene with a self-titled debut that quickly became one of the defining albums of the genre. The combination of Scott Wenzel’s gritty, distinctive vocals and Rex Carroll’s extraordinary guitar work gave Christian metal something it had rarely heard before—a band capable of delivering the flash, hooks, riffs, solos, and attitude of mainstream ’80s metal while establishing an identity unmistakably their own.

Nineteen Eighty Seven takes listeners back to where it all began—but this is NOT simply a remastered edition of the original Whitecross album.

This is a complete re-recording.

Scott Wenzel, Rex Carroll, and drummer Michael Feighan returned to the material and rebuilt the classic debut with a bigger, louder, more powerful sound. Songs including “Who Will You Follow,” “Enough Is Enough,” “He Is The Rock,” “No Way I’m Going Down,” “Seein’ Is Believin’,” “All I Need,” and “Signs Of The End” receive entirely new performances while retaining the riffs, melodies, and attitude that made the originals Christian metal classics.

Rex Carroll remains one of the defining attractions. His combination of speed, technique, melody, and over-the-top ’80s guitar heroics helped put Whitecross on the map, while Wenzel’s unmistakable vocal style gave the band a sound immediately recognizable from the opening notes.

The Gold Edition includes the epic “Love On The Line,” originally associated with Whitecross’ classic Love On The Line EP, along with Rex Carroll’s 2005 guitar instrumental “Re:Animate.” Also included is “Angel’s Wing,” a newly recorded Rex Carroll guitar piece created specifically for this 2015 Gold Edition.

The original Whitecross debut arrived at the height of the ’80s metal explosion and helped establish the band as one of Christian metal’s most important acts. Whitecross would continue recording throughout the late ’80s and ’90s, but the chemistry between Wenzel’s vocals and Carroll’s spectacular guitar playing remains central to the band’s legacy.
