Atomic Opera Classics Return!

Penguin Dust & Gospel Cola Remastered on CD and Vinyl

Two essential chapters in the Atomic Opera catalog are back — and for the first time, both are coming to vinyl!

Retroactive Records is proud to announce deluxe reissues of Atomic Opera's Penguin Dust (1997) and Gospel Cola (2000), newly remastered and available for pre-order now on CD and limited-edition vinyl.

For fans of King's X, Galactic Cowboys, Awful Truth, and progressive hard rock that refuses to fit neatly into a box, these albums showcase exactly what made Atomic Opera such a distinctive band: massive melodies, progressive arrangements, heavy guitars, unexpected instrumentation, intelligent lyrics, and a willingness to wrestle with faith and life without settling for easy answers.

Atomic Opera – Penguin Dust

Following For Madmen Only, Frank Hart and Atomic Opera took their music in an even more independent and adventurous direction with Penguin Dust.

Frank handles vocals, bass, guitars, and cello, joined by Mark Poindexter on drums and Kemper Crabb (ArkAngel) on mandolin and vocals. The album was mixed by Alan Doss of Galactic Cowboys and originally mastered by Ty Tabor of King's X.

Songs including “Make a God,” “Thirst,” “God of Hate,” “November,” “Spirit of the Age,” and “Water Grave” combine progressive hard rock with melody, unusual instrumentation, and lyrics that wrestle openly with faith, doubt, pain, and the difficult questions of life.

Atomic Opera – Gospel Cola

Originally released by Metal Blade Records in 2000, Gospel Cola took Atomic Opera somewhere different again.

The lineup of Frank Hart, Kemper Crabb, Ryan Birsinger, and John Simmons created an album overflowing with musical ideas — from progressive hard rock and heavy guitars to mandolin, dulcimer, bouzouki, cello, Chapman Stick, harmonica, organ, and more.

Beneath all that musical creativity is an album with something to say. From the biting humor of “Jesus Junk” to “Winterland,” “Malediction,” “Silence,” “Muse,” “Love Is As Strong As Death,” and “The Circle Is Closed,” Atomic Opera confronts religious hypocrisy, faith, doubt, culture, mortality, and spiritual conviction without sounding like anyone else.

Two CDs + Two Vinyl Reissues from the Legendary Houston Groove Rockers

Fans of King’s X, Galactic Cowboys, and the rich Houston groove-rock sound are about to get something very special.

Retroactive Records is bringing Atomic Opera back in a big way with four collector editions — two CDs and two vinyl releases — celebrating both their major label breakthrough album For Madmen Only and the fascinating companion collection Alpha & Oranges.

These releases dive deep into the creative world of one of the most unique bands to emerge from the Houston scene of the early 1990s. Produced by Sam Taylor (King’s X, Galactic Cowboys, ZZ Top), Atomic Opera blended thick groove, stacked vocal harmonies, progressive ideas, and emotional songwriting into something truly distinctive.

All four editions are extremely limited and designed with collectors in mind.

💿 Atomic Opera – For Madmen Only (Collector’s Edition CD)

Price: $14.95
Limited to: 300 CDs
Format: Jewel case with 16-page booklet
Product ID: RRCD2052

Originally released in 1994 on Warner Brothers/Giant Records, For Madmen Only introduced Atomic Opera to a national audience with its unique blend of heavy groove, progressive rock textures, and layered harmonies.

Produced by Sam Taylor, the album captured the band’s powerful and thoughtful sound at a time when heavy music was evolving rapidly. The standout single “Justice” received rotation on MTV and metal radio, helping the band reach listeners well beyond the underground. Atomic Opera would go on to tour in support of the record alongside metal legend Dio, bringing their dynamic sound to audiences across the country.

The album’s title itself hints at its deeper intent. Borrowed from Hermann Hesse’s novel Steppenwolf, the phrase “For Madmen Only” refers to the mysterious Magic Theatre — a place where people confront the hidden sides of themselves. For Atomic Opera, that idea captured the spirit of the record: music meant not simply to comfort, but to be entered, explored, and wrestled with.

This Retroactive Records Collector’s Edition CD is limited to just 300 copies and includes a CD-only bonus track featuring the radio edit of “Justice.” The package also features a 16-page booklet and a new 2026 reflection written by band leader Frank Hart, revisiting the story behind the album and the creative spirit that produced it.

💿 Atomic Opera – Alpha & Oranges (Collector’s Edition CD)

Price: $14.95
Limited to: 300 CDs
Format: Jewel case with 16-page booklet
Product ID: RRCD2055

While recording For Madmen Only, Atomic Opera created far more music than could ultimately fit on the album. The material that remained would eventually become Alpha & Oranges, a fascinating collection of recordings from the same creative era.

Produced by Sam Taylor, these songs were recorded in Houston studios between 1990 and 1993 and showcase the band’s creative momentum during the sessions that produced their major label debut.

The sessions themselves were legendary. Atomic Opera often recorded late at night in the same studio used by King’s X during the day, using the same gear and sonic environment that helped define the distinctive Houston groove-rock sound.

Rather than simple leftovers, the songs on Alpha & Oranges reveal a band exploring the full range of their musical identity — from powerful riff-driven passages to reflective, harmony-rich moments that highlight their progressive influences.

Originally released in 1999 as a CD-only title on Massive Groove Productions, the album has long been sought after by collectors and fans.

This Retroactive Records Collector’s Edition CD is limited to just 300 copies, packaged in a jewel case with a 16-page booklet, and includes a new 2026 reflection written by Frank Hart about the origins of these recordings and the creative energy surrounding the band at the time.
