AFTERWINTER RETURNS WITH BOUNDLESS
AFTERWINTER returns with Boundless, their deeply personal sophomore album and the follow-up to the ambitious double-CD debut Paramnesia, released by Roxx Records in 2023.
For those familiar with the band's history, AfterWinter features the core musicians responsible for the music on the exceptional BioGenesis albums A Decadence Divine and Black Widow.
With Boundless, AfterWinter presents a somewhat more direct side of its progressive metal sound. The songs are occasionally shorter and the arrangements a little more traditional, but don't mistake that for conventional. There is still plenty of the distinctive AfterWinter "weirdness" that made Paramnesia such an adventurous listen.
Progressive, melodic, unpredictable and deeply personal, the musical identity of AfterWinter remains firmly intact.
LOSS, FAITH & THE SEARCH FOR PEACE
Boundless also comes from a very different place emotionally.
In 2024, AfterWinter lost lead vocalist Jerry Grazios following his battle with brain cancer. His passing profoundly affected the band and changed the direction of the album they were creating.
Loss became impossible to separate from the music.
Rather than offering easy answers about grief, the songs wrestle with what it actually means to continue living after someone important is gone. Again and again, one idea emerged from that struggle: peace.
That search for peace became intertwined with images of nature - a quiet lake, trees, sunlight and a place removed from the constant noise and distractions of everyday life. It became an image not only of earthly peace, but of finding space to experience the presence of God in the midst of grief.
That imagery runs throughout Boundless and ultimately becomes literal. The album concludes with a full minute of nature sounds recorded at the exact location where the album's cover photograph was taken.
It is a fitting final statement for an album created in the midst of loss: the hope that beyond the pain, somehow, there can still be peace.
A NEW CHAPTER FOR AFTERWINTER
Jerry Grazios could not simply be replaced, and AfterWinter didn't attempt to do so.
In addition to his established roles as producer and lead guitarist, Luke Nealeigh steps into the male lead vocal role. Longtime listeners will already recognize Luke's voice from "Regression," the first song AfterWinter ever released.
Majennica Nealeigh remains co-lead vocalist, joined by Sam Nealeigh on keyboards, James Riggs on rhythm guitar, Eli Closson on drums and Dan Nealeigh on bass.
The result is an AfterWinter that has inevitably changed while retaining the musical core that established the band's identity.
More than simply a follow-up to Paramnesia, Boundless became a way for the members of AfterWinter to explore how faith intersects with grief, to honor and remember their friend and bandmate Jerry Grazios, and perhaps offer some comfort to others walking through loss of their own.
