CRUMBÄCHER – INCANDESCENT: THE 1985 CHRISTIAN NEW-WAVE DEBUT FINALLY ON CD!
Before Escape from the Fallen Planet and Thunder Beach, there was Incandescent. Released in April 1985 through Broken Records, Crumbächer's debut album introduced a band that was doing something genuinely different within Christian music. Combining the emerging sounds of new wave and synth-pop with melodic songwriting and thoughtful lyrics, Incandescent helped establish Crumbächer as one of the most distinctive voices in the developing Christian alternative scene.
Led by vocalist, keyboardist, and songwriter Stephen Crumbächer, the band embraced a musical landscape filled with synthesizers, electronic textures, rhythmic experimentation, and memorable pop melodies. At a time when much of Christian rock still relied on traditional guitar-driven arrangements, Crumbächer were looking toward the adventurous sounds of contemporary new wave, bringing fresh energy and imagination to their music.
The album captures the excitement of a young band discovering its musical identity. Songs like "Understudy," "Infrared / X-Ray Eyes," "Glowing in the Dark," and "So Strange" reflect the band's interest in combining accessible songwriting with the unusual sounds and textures of the synthesizer era. The arrangements are inventive without abandoning melody, giving the album a distinctive personality that still appeals to fans of classic 1980s electronic pop.
One of the album's defining moments is "Jamie," widely identified as the first song Stephen Crumbächer ever wrote. Its inclusion makes Incandescent particularly significant in understanding the band's beginnings. Elsewhere, "It Don't Matter," "Sweet By and By," and "Track You Down" demonstrate the band's ability to move between engaging pop arrangements, inventive musical ideas, and lyrics grounded in Christian faith.
The album helped earn Crumbächer recognition as one of CCM Magazine's leading new bands of the year, and it provided the creative foundation for the group's subsequent releases. While Escape from the Fallen Planet would take their electronic ambitions even further, Incandescent retains a special appeal as the recording where so many of those musical ideas first came together.
Now, more than forty years after its original release, Girder Records brings Incandescent to physical CD for the first time. Newly remastered from the best available source elements, this edition offers improved clarity and presentation while preserving the distinctive character of the original recordings. Packaged in a jewel case with an 8-page booklet, the release includes lyrics, archival photographs, and historical material.
Collectors also receive a valuable bonus track: "It Don't Matter" (What's Shakin' Mix), an alternate recording associated with the 1984 What's Shakin' compilation. This addition connects the album with an even earlier chapter in Crumbächer's history, expanding the original eight-song release to nine tracks.
For longtime fans, Incandescent is an opportunity to revisit the beginning of a memorable Christian new-wave band in a dedicated CD edition. For listeners who appreciate the adventurous musical spirit of the 1980s, it's a compelling introduction to Crumbächer's combination of synthesizer-driven pop, melodic hooks, and creative songwriting.
