🎤 Newsboys – Not Ashamed
Originally released in 1992, Not Ashamed was the album where the Newsboys began to fully define the sound and personality that would carry them through one of the most successful runs in Christian rock history.
After three earlier albums, the Australian band entered a new creative phase by working with acclaimed singer, songwriter, and producer Steve Taylor. Taylor's influence extended well beyond production, helping shape the album's clever lyrics, sharp humor, memorable hooks, and distinctive pop-rock identity alongside drummer and songwriter Peter Furler.
The album also helped establish the vocal combination of John James and Peter Furler, a defining element of the Newsboys' 1990s material. Together with keyboardist/programmer Corey Pryor and guitarist Vernon Bishop, the band delivered a record that blended synth-driven pop, guitar-based rock, and the quirky energy that would soon become unmistakably Newsboys.
The title track, “I'm Not Ashamed,” became one of the band's earliest signature songs and a major Christian radio hit. The album also produced memorable tracks including “Upon This Rock,” “I Cannot Get You Out of My System,” and the inventive “Where You Belong / Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”
Another standout is the band's version of “Boycott Hell,” originally recorded by Christian rock pioneers DeGarmo & Key. In the hands of the Newsboys, the song fits naturally alongside the album's energetic mix of rock, pop, and distinctly early-'90s production.
