More than 20 years after their previous studio album, Christian rock legends Petra return with Hope – a completely new studio album featuring 10 new songs and the unmistakable sound of one of the most influential bands in Christian rock history.
This isn't a collection assembled from old demos or unfinished ideas. Hope was developed as a new Petra album, with founding member Bob Hartman driving the project and bringing his instantly recognizable guitar work back to the center of the band's sound.
John Schlitt delivers the powerful lead vocals that have defined so much of Petra's classic catalog, joined by longtime keyboardist John Lawry, bassist Greg Bailey, and drummer Cristian Bornero. The result is unmistakably Petra: melodic, guitar-driven Christian rock with strong hooks, keyboards, soaring vocals, and plenty of guitar.
The album begins with the hard-driving “Filthy Lucre” and moves through songs centered on faith, perseverance, repentance, redemption, and trust. “Kiss the Coals,” “Oxygen,” and “Skin in the Game” confront difficult questions, while “We Rejoice in Hope,” “Miracle Maker,” and “There Will Still Be a Dawn” lean into encouragement and assurance.
“Thorns” and “Looking Back” bring a reflective dimension to the album before “Deliver Us” closes the record. Across all ten songs, the band's decades of experience are evident without turning Hope into an exercise in nostalgia.
That's particularly significant for a band whose history reaches back more than five decades. Petra helped establish Christian rock as a genre, built an international audience, earned Grammy and Dove Awards, and influenced generations of Christian rock and metal musicians. Hope adds a genuinely new chapter to that history rather than simply revisiting the old ones.
The message is equally characteristic of Petra. The album's title is more than a nostalgic statement about the band's return: throughout Hope, the songs point repeatedly toward perseverance, God's faithfulness, and the conviction that even in difficult circumstances, there is still reason to hope.
