Originally released by Metal Blade Records in 1997, Ancient's Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends stands as one of the most distinctive and adventurous releases in the Norwegian band's catalog. Their third full-length album found Ancient expanding beyond the boundaries of their earlier black-metal sound and embracing a darker, more theatrical, melodic, and gothic atmosphere.
The album features Aphazel on guitars, bass, and keyboards; Kaiaphas on vocals and drums; multi-instrumentalist Jesus Christ! contributing guitars, bass, keyboards, cello, and piano; and Erichte adding female vocals. Together they created an album that could move from aggressive black metal to haunting keyboards, slower atmospheric passages, clean and female vocals, piano, cello, and dramatic gothic textures without losing Ancient's extreme-metal foundation.
That willingness to experiment makes Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends an especially fascinating chapter in Ancient's history. Rather than simply repeating what had come before, the band widened its musical palette considerably. The result is a sprawling 67-minute journey that is melodic, sinister, theatrical, atmospheric, and frequently unpredictable.
The album's lyrical and visual world expanded as well, embracing vampiric, supernatural, occult, and gothic themes that fit naturally with its more dramatic musical direction. Tracks including “A Mad Blood Scenario,” “The Draining,” “Sleeping Princess of the Arges,” “Her Northern Majesty,” “The Emerald Tablet,” “Hecate, My Love and Lust,” and “Vampirize Natasha” give the record an identity unlike anything else in Ancient's catalog.
