🌸 Audio Adrenaline – Bloom
Thirty years after its original 1996 release, Audio Adrenaline's Bloom returns to vinyl in a limited 30th Anniversary Edition celebrating one of the defining Christian rock albums of the 1990s.
Bloom arrived at the moment Audio Adrenaline fully established its own musical identity. The album combined the alternative and grunge textures of the mid-'90s with memorable melodies, muscular guitar riffs, big choruses, and the unmistakable voice of Mark Stuart. It was heavier than conventional CCM rock without abandoning the infectious hooks that had already made the band a favorite with Christian rock audiences.
The album opens with the driving “Secret” and rarely lets up. “Never Gonna Be As Big As Jesus” became one of the band's signature songs, while “I'm Not The King,” “Good People,” “Walk On Water,” and “Memoir” helped make Bloom one of Audio Adrenaline's most enduring records.
Original guitarist Barry Blair is particularly important to the sound of Bloom. His electric guitar work gives the record much of its character, balancing the era's heavier alternative-rock influence with prominent riffs and leads. Bloom would also become Blair's final studio album with Audio Adrenaline, making the record the conclusion of the band's original guitar-driven era.
The band's personality also comes through in its version of “Free Ride,” the classic song associated with The Edgar Winter Group. Rather than feeling disconnected from the album, the cover fits naturally alongside Bloom's energetic, riff-heavy original material.
Commercially, Bloom marked an important breakthrough. It became Audio Adrenaline's first RIAA Gold-certified album, representing sales of more than 500,000 units, while its songs became fixtures of Christian rock radio. The album also received major industry recognition with nominations for both a Grammy Award for Best Rock Gospel Album and a Dove Award for Rock Album of the Year.
Three decades later, Bloom remains a snapshot of Christian rock at a particularly creative moment: alternative enough to reflect what was happening in mainstream rock, accessible enough to produce memorable radio songs, and unmistakably Audio Adrenaline.
