Thirty-five years after its original release, Kalhoun returns in an extraordinary Deluxe 2-CD Collector's Edition featuring 28 tracks – including an entire second disc of 17 bonus tracks EXCLUSIVE to this CD reissue!
Originally released in 1991, Kalhoun arrived four years after the band's previous studio album and during another fascinating chapter in the long and constantly evolving history of Daniel Amos. During the intervening years, Terry Taylor had been heavily involved with The Swirling Eddies while also producing records for artists including Jacob's Trouble and Scaterd Few.
Even the band's name reflected its continuing reinvention. Over the years Daniel Amos had shortened its name to variations including DA and da. For Kalhoun, the band adopted the distinctive stylized dä identity that appears throughout the album's artwork.
Musically and lyrically, Kalhoun found the band tackling everything from relationships and faith to politics and the abuse of power. "If You Want To" delivers an arena-sized rock love song, while "Father Explains" reflects the political atmosphere surrounding the Gulf War and President George H. W. Bush's discussion of a "new world order." "Virgin Falls" confronts the abuse of power, while "I Will Return" looks toward the promised return of Christ in the midst of a difficult present.
The album features the formidable lineup of Terry Taylor, Greg Flesch, Tim Chandler and Ed McTaggart. Produced by Terry Taylor & dä, the original album delivers 11 tracks including "Big, Warm, Sweet, Interior Glowing," "If You Want To," "Kalhoun," "I Will Return," "Tracking The Amorous Man," "Virgin Falls," "Gloryhound," "Prayer Wheel," "Note To Anna," "Father Explains" and "Gate Of The World."
But for this 35th Anniversary Collector's Edition, the original album is only Disc One.
Disc Two opens the vault with an extraordinary 17 additional tracks – and this entire bonus disc is EXCLUSIVE to this 2-CD reissue.
Rather than simply adding a few extra songs to the end of the original album, Retroactive Records has devoted an entire second CD to archival material. It offers a fascinating alternate journey through Kalhoun, filled with acoustic mixes, alternate mixes, an outtake, rough mix, early take, instrumental mixes, archival curiosities and a 1990 cassette demo.
The alternate journey begins with "Big Warm Swede (Mostly Acoustic Mix)" and continues with acoustic interpretations of "If You Want To," "I Will Return," "Tracking The Amorous Man," "Virgin Falls" and "Gate Of The World." These versions strip away and rearrange elements of the familiar recordings, offering collectors another perspective on songs they have known for decades.
The vault opens even further with "Kalhoun (Outtake 1)," "Gloryhound (Swirly Steels)," "Prayer Wheel (Rough Mix)," "Note To Anna (Alt Mix)" and "Father Explains (Early Take)." Instrumental mixes of "Kalhoun" and "Tracking The Amorous Man" provide another opportunity to hear the arrangements from a different angle, while "Virgin Falls (Lead & Horns Mix)" highlights additional musical elements.
Disc Two also digs deeper with the wonderfully titled "The B52s Evangelize Mars," another mostly acoustic mix of "Big, Warm, Sweet, Interior Glowing," and finally an archival 1990 cassette demo of "If You Want To."
Taken together, the bonus disc functions almost like a companion album to Kalhoun. Instead of simply hearing the finished 1991 record again, listeners can hear songs developing, changing shape and revealing musical details that disappeared or evolved before the final versions were completed.
