Originally released in 1983, Doppelgänger is the second installment of Daniel Amos’ ambitious four-album ¡Alarma! Chronicles and one of the most adventurous recordings in the band’s catalog. Terry Taylor and company had already left their country-rock beginnings far behind, but Doppelgänger pushed their transformation even further, combining new wave, art rock, angular guitars, inventive rhythms, keyboards, pop hooks, satire, social commentary, and theology into something remarkably distinctive. More than four decades later, the album retains much of its original bite because so many of Taylor’s observations about consumerism, celebrity, technology, religion, and popular culture have aged remarkably well.

“Mall (All Over The World)” takes aim at consumer culture and the increasingly central role of shopping in modern identity, while “New Car!” and “I Didn't Build It For Me” turn a critical eye toward religious excess and celebrity. “Youth With A Machine,” “Autographs For The Sick,” “Real Girls,” and “The Double” continue the album’s examination of image, fame, identity, and modern culture. The result is an album that was strikingly unconventional in 1983 and remains provocative today, packed with ideas without sacrificing the melodies and hooks that make these songs memorable.

Musically, Doppelgänger captures an exceptional Daniel Amos lineup at full creative strength. Terry Taylor handles rhythm guitar and lead vocals, Jerry Chamberlain contributes lead guitar and vocals, Tim Chandler supplies bass and additional percussion, and Ed McTaggart drives the album with drums and percussion. The sessions also feature keyboards from Tom Howard, Rob Watson, Jeff Lams, and Mark Cook, percussion from Alex MacDougall, saxophone from Bill Colton, and backing vocals from an eclectic group that includes Randy Stonehill, Derri Daugherty, and Tom Howard. The album was produced by Taylor, Chamberlain, and Thom Roy and recorded and mixed at Whitefield Studios in Santa Ana, California.

This Deluxe 2-CD Collector’s Edition greatly expands the original album. Disc One presents all 15 tracks of Doppelgänger with remastered sonic clarity, while Disc Two delivers 17 bonus tracks that provide a fascinating look inside the album and the era surrounding it. Alternate takes and rough mixes sit alongside instrumental versions, studio experiments, and live performances from 1983. Highlights include “The Double (Extended Rough Mix),” “Youth With A Machine (Toy Mix),” alternate versions of “Hollow Man,” “Mall,” and “Distance And Direction,” plus live 1983 performances of “Real Girls,” “New Car!” and “Memory Lane.”
