ABOUT THE ALBUM

When Michael Knott released Poplife in 1991 on Blonde Vinyl Records, he dropped a sun-splashed curveball into the Christian alternative scene—equal parts surf-pop-punk, indie rock, and West Coast mischief. Poplife feels like a board waxed just enough to hold, but loose enough to wipe out with style: catchy, carefree on the surface, and quietly thoughtful underneath.

Rather than chasing glossy production, the album rides a more immediate, lived-in sound—jangly guitars, punchy rhythms, and hooks that sneak up on you and refuse to paddle away. Knott’s real gift is lyric writing that feels human and honest without ever getting preachy or cheesy. Standouts like “Jet Plane” (a lament for a stolen guitar), “Skate” (a protest with punk bite), and the endlessly quotable “Surf With God” capture a restless faith that’s more about movement than monuments—less choir loft, more shoreline.

Drums are handled in part by Steve Hindalong of The Choir, bringing drive, feel, and just the right amount of polish, alongside contributions from Chuck Cummings. The result is an album that sounds like Southern California sunshine filtered through punk ethics—fun, fast, and unexpectedly sincere.

This Legends Remastered Strawberry Jam vinyl reissue, released in cooperation with Robert Freeman, is the 35th Anniversary Edition and marks the first time Poplife has ever been available on vinyl. Pressed on Strawberry Jam color vinyl and limited to just 250 copies, the album has been mastered for vinyl by J Powell at Steinhaus, giving these songs new warmth, punch, and analog bite. The release includes a deluxe 2-panel 12x12 insert packed with photos, lyrics, interviews, and rare ephemera, including an interview with Steve Hindalong reflecting on the recording sessions, memories from Blonde Vinyl’s Christopher Rumbaugh sharing the backstory—and humor—behind the first-time bonus track “Nacho,” and reflections from Blonde Vinyl artist Rod Roels, including stories behind the album artwork and Michael Knott’s original, unused cover concept.

As the creative force behind Blonde Vinyl Records and a key figure connected to the earliest days of Tooth & Nail, Michael Knott’s influence on Christian alternative music runs deep. Through Lifesavers, L.S. Underground, Aunt Betty’s, and Cush, he helped prove that faith-filled music could be weird, joyful, irreverent, and artistically fearless.

Poplife isn’t a museum piece—it’s a beach day pressed to wax. Drop the needle, crank it loud, let the surf-punk hooks crash in, and remember: faith doesn’t always wear a robe—sometimes it shows up in board shorts, sunburn, and a grin. This 35th Anniversary Legends Remastered edition honors one of the defining albums from the Blonde Vinyl era.

For fans of L.S. Underground, Undercover, NOFX, Altar Boys, The Queers, Descendents, Lagwagon, Psychedelic Furs, The Beach Boys.
