🎸 Mark Farner – Some Kind of Wonderful
For the first time ever, Mark Farner's classic Frontline Records album Some Kind of Wonderful is available on vinyl – pressed on heavyweight opaque “Rubber Duckie” yellow vinyl and limited to only 300 copies!
Roxx Records proudly partners with Meis Music to revive and celebrate an important chapter in the career of Mark Farner, the legendary singer, guitarist, and songwriter whose voice and guitar work helped define Grand Funk Railroad.
Farner's musical roots reach back to the Michigan rock scene of the 1960s, where he developed a style grounded in blues, rock, soul, and raw live energy. Those influences would become central to the sound that helped Grand Funk Railroad grow into one of the biggest American hard rock acts of the 1970s.
With Farner as one of its central creative forces, Grand Funk built a catalog filled with gold and platinum records and enduring songs including “I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home),” “We're an American Band,” “The Loco-Motion,” “Bad Time,” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.”
In the 1980s, Farner entered a very different stage of his career. His songwriting became more spiritually focused and message-driven, while retaining the gritty vocals, blues-rooted guitar work, and strong melodic instincts that had always defined his music.
That period brought Farner to Frontline Records, where he released a series of albums that became favorites among Christian rock and melodic hard rock listeners.
Some Kind of Wonderful was Farner's final studio album for Frontline and became one of the most memorable releases from that phase of his career.
At the center of the record is Farner's new interpretation of “Some Kind of Wonderful,” the Soul Brothers Six song that Grand Funk Railroad had turned into a major hit in the 1970s.
Revisiting the song connected Farner's contemporary solo work directly to his rock-and-roll legacy. The newer recording brought a more contemporary production approach while preserving the bluesy groove, vocal swagger, and unmistakable Farner personality that helped make the song so enduring in the first place.
But the album offers much more than its title track. Songs including “Love From Above,” “Without You,” “Not Yet,” “Attitude of Gratitude,” “All The Way,” and “The Vision” showcase Farner's blend of melodic rock, faith-centered songwriting, and soulful performance.
Some Kind of Wonderful captures an artist looking both backward and forward – acknowledging the music that first brought him to an enormous audience while continuing the spiritually focused direction that characterized his Frontline Records years.
For this special 2026 Roxx Records edition, the album has been remastered by Rob Colwell, whose work includes projects connected with Brother Cane, King's X, Sixpence None The Richer, and numerous respected catalog reissues.
And for collectors, this edition represents a genuine first: Some Kind of Wonderful has never previously been released on vinyl.
Roxx Records presents the album on heavyweight opaque “Rubber Duckie” yellow vinyl, with the pressing strictly limited to only 300 copies.
The LP also includes a substantial 12" x 12" insert featuring photos, lyrics, and credits, giving this first-ever vinyl edition the kind of physical presentation collectors expect from a limited Roxx Records release.
More than three decades after the album's original release, Mark Farner continues to bring his music to audiences through Mark Farner's American Band, performing material spanning his Grand Funk Railroad years and solo career.
For fans of Grand Funk Railroad, Humble Pie, Cactus, Darrell Mansfield, Rez, and classic blues-driven hard rock, this is the definitive collector vinyl edition of Some Kind of Wonderful – FIRST TIME EVER ON VINYL, heavyweight opaque “Rubber Duckie” yellow vinyl, limited to only 300 copies, and NOW SHIPPING!
