🎸 Mark Farner – Wake Up...
A long-overdue return to CD for one of the most distinctive albums from Mark Farner's post-Grand Funk Railroad career.
Roxx Records proudly partners with Meis Music to revive and celebrate the classic Frontline Records recordings of Mark Farner, the legendary singer, guitarist, and songwriter whose unmistakable voice and guitar work helped define Grand Funk Railroad.
Originally released during Farner's late-'80s Frontline Records period, Wake Up... represents a fascinating chapter in the career of one of American rock's most recognizable voices. This 2026 Roxx Records edition makes the album available on CD for the first time since 1989, newly remastered by Rob Colwell and packaged with an 8-page lyric booklet.
Farner's career stretches back to the Michigan music scene of the 1960s, where he developed a style rooted in blues, rock, soul, and high-energy live performance. That sound exploded onto the national stage with Grand Funk Railroad, one of the most successful American hard rock bands of the 1970s.
With Farner as one of its principal voices, Grand Funk released a remarkable catalog that included multiple gold and platinum albums and enduring hits such as “I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home),” “We're an American Band,” “The Loco-Motion,” “Bad Time,” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.”
By the 1980s, Farner's songwriting had entered a different phase. Rather than chasing the excesses of mainstream rock, he increasingly focused on faith, spiritual awareness, social responsibility, and personal transformation, while retaining the bluesy guitar work and soulful vocal delivery that had always defined his music.
That period brought Farner to Frontline Records, where he released a series of albums that became highly regarded among fans of Christian rock and melodic hard rock.
Wake Up... continued that evolution with a sound rooted in blues-rock and heartland rock. This is not simply Grand Funk revisited. The record is more reflective and message-driven, with Farner's gritty, earnest vocals carrying songs built around spiritual urgency, grace, character, love, and responsibility.
The guitar work serves the songs rather than dominating them. Farner's playing remains unmistakable, but the focus is on emotional weight, memorable melodies, and a strong lyrical message.
One of the album's standout tracks, “Upright Man,” received significant airplay on CCM radio and remains one of the best-known songs from this chapter of Farner's career.
Other songs including “Wake Up,” “Into The Light,” “Come To Me,” “If It Wasn't For Grace,” “Love Power,” and “Role Model” showcase the balance between Farner's classic rock roots and the spiritually focused songwriting that defined his Frontline-era work.
For this 2026 Roxx Records edition, the album has been remastered by Rob Colwell, whose mastering credits include work involving Brother Cane, King's X, Sixpence None The Richer, and numerous respected reissue projects.
The physical CD is housed in a traditional jewel case and includes an 8-page lyric booklet, making this a substantial new edition for collectors who have waited decades to put Wake Up... back on the shelf.
Farner's music remains very much alive. He continues to perform with Mark Farner's American Band, bringing Grand Funk classics and material from throughout his career to audiences across the country.
For fans of Grand Funk Railroad, Humble Pie, Cactus, Darrell Mansfield, Rez, and classic blues-driven hard rock, Wake Up... captures Mark Farner at a unique point where his rock-and-roll roots, soulful voice, guitar work, and faith-centered songwriting came together.
