Roxx Records proudly partners with Meis Music to revive and celebrate an important chapter in the career of Mark Farner, the legendary singer, guitarist, and songwriter whose unmistakable voice and guitar work helped define Grand Funk Railroad.
Farner's musical career began in Michigan during the 1960s, where he developed a style rooted in blues, rock, soul, and raw live energy. Those influences became central to the sound that helped Grand Funk Railroad grow into one of the most successful American hard rock bands of the 1970s.
With Farner as one of the band's principal creative voices, Grand Funk built a remarkable catalog that included multiple gold and platinum albums and enduring songs such as “I'm Your Captain (Closer to Home),” “We're an American Band,” “The Loco-Motion,” “Bad Time,” and “Some Kind of Wonderful.”
By the 1980s, Farner had entered a very different phase of his career. His songwriting became more spiritually focused and message-driven while retaining the blues-rooted guitar work, soulful vocals, and melodic instincts that had always defined his music.
That chapter brought Farner to Frontline Records, where he released a series of albums that became highly regarded among Christian rock and melodic hard rock listeners.
Wake Up... continued that evolution with a sound grounded in blues-rock and heartland rock. Rather than simply trying to recreate the raw, riff-heavy sound of classic Grand Funk, Farner used this album to explore a more reflective and message-driven direction.
His gritty, earnest vocals remain unmistakable throughout the record, while the guitar work is focused less on flash and more on supporting the emotional weight and meaning of the songs.
The title track “Wake Up” sets the tone, followed by songs such as “Into The Light,” “New Age,” “Come To Me,” and “In Your Sight.”
One of the album's best-known songs, “Upright Man,” received substantial CCM radio airplay and remains one of the standout tracks from Farner's Frontline-era catalog.
