🎸 About the Album
Ordained Fate – Demo Anthology (1986–1990)
The history of underground American heavy metal is filled with bands that never achieved widespread recognition but left behind recordings that continue to fascinate dedicated collectors. Ordained Fate belongs among those discoveries—a band whose roots stretch back to the early 1980s and whose music combines the intensity of thrash metal with the melodic ambition of traditional American power metal.
Originally known as Cryptic Axe, the group was founded by Pam Scott (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), Annette Cvengros (lead guitar), and Marge Curtner (bass). Their music emerged during a period when heavy metal was rapidly evolving, with bands exploring faster tempos, harder guitar tones, and increasingly adventurous arrangements.
The band's early recordings reveal a distinctive combination of heavy riffs, energetic rhythms, aggressive guitar work, and strong female lead vocals. Moving between traditional metal, power metal, and thrash, Ordained Fate developed a sound rooted in the independent American metal underground rather than commercial trends.
Demo Anthology, released by Stormspell Records in 2014 as part of its RED-WHITE-HEAVY series, brings together 13 tracks recorded between 1986 and 1990. The collection documents the band's earliest period as Cryptic Axe and follows its evolution through two later Ordained Fate demo sessions.
The anthology opens with "Minions of the Adversary" and "The Pit," both taken from the 1986 Cryptic Axe demo. Two additional songs from that early session, "Mask of Fear" and "Temptation I," could not be included because the original master tapes were lost. Their absence is a reminder of just how fragile the recorded history of underground metal can be.
The next six tracks come from the band's February 1989 demo, including "Midnight Exodus," "The Light Bearer," "Sweet Dreams," and "Mystic Wind." These recordings offer another chapter in the group's developing musical identity.
The final five songs were recorded and mixed in May 1990, completing the anthology with "Let's Make a Deal," "No Death," "The Hunted," "Temptation II," and "Wonderful Love." Together, the three demo sessions present a fascinating progression through the band's formative years.
The recordings were made at Curved Air Studios, with engineering by Al Purvey. For this CD release, the audio was remastered by Cederick Forsberg, with cover artwork by Yannick Bouchard and layout by Mumintroll.
For collectors who appreciate the history of American underground heavy metal, Demo Anthology offers more than a collection of old recordings. It preserves the work of musicians whose music deserves to be heard beyond the original cassette-trading era.
For Fans Of: Chastain, Warlock, early Metal Church, traditional US power metal, and underground 1980s thrash metal.
