đŸ€˜ Patriarchs In Black – Completely Covered in Black

Dan Lorenzo and Johnny Kelly turn up the volume on the records that helped shape them.

Patriarchs In Black began at the end of 2021 as a collaboration between guitarist Dan Lorenzo of Hades and Non-Fiction and drummer Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative. Their formula has always been unusual: Lorenzo and Kelly provide the musical foundation while bringing a rotating cast of singers and bassists into the studio, giving individual songs their own personalities while maintaining the massive, riff-driven Patriarchs In Black sound.

After four albums of original material – Reach for the Scars (2022), My Veneration (2023), Visioning (2024), and Home (2025) – along with the 2025 Covered in Black EP, Lorenzo and Kelly decided to dive even deeper into the music that influenced them.

The result is Completely Covered in Black: an album devoted primarily to songs that helped form their musical DNA, reworked through the unmistakably heavy Patriarchs In Black approach.

And this isn't a collection built around one predictable corner of heavy metal history. Patriarchs In Black move from Black Sabbath and KISS to Led Zeppelin, Twisted Sister, Motörhead, Queen, and even Peter Gabriel, filtering each song through the band's own dark, heavy, guitar-driven personality.

KISS occupies a particularly important place here. Lorenzo has spoken openly about the profound influence the band – and especially Ace Frehley – had on his decision to become a guitarist. On New Year's Eve 1978, Lorenzo and his friends were playing air guitar to KISS Alive!. Lorenzo insisted on being Ace for every song. Within a few months, he had started actually playing guitar.

That lifelong connection makes the inclusion of “Strange Ways,” “Hotter Than Hell,” and “Almost Human” much more than a casual selection of KISS covers. They pay tribute to music that helped set Lorenzo on the path he has followed ever since.

Black Sabbath receives similar attention through the ominous instrumental “Supertzar” and the classic “Snowblind.” Led Zeppelin is represented on the main album by “Immigrant Song” and “The Ocean,” while Twisted Sister's “Destroyer,” Motörhead's “The Chase,” and Queen's “Dragon Attack” take the record through several different generations and styles of heavy rock.

One of the most unexpected choices is Peter Gabriel's “Games Without Frontiers.” The idea came from Johnny Kelly, giving Patriarchs In Black the opportunity to take something far removed from conventional heavy metal and reshape it within their own musical world. The track is highlighted by a powerful vocal performance from Mark Sunshine of Unida.

The rotating cast of musicians is another major part of the appeal. Along with Sunshine, the album features vocal performances from artists including Kyle Thomas of Exhorder, Rob Dukes of Exodus, Bobby Jensen of Hairball, John Kosco, and others. Different musicians bring their own character to the material while Lorenzo and Kelly provide the backbone that holds everything together.

The CD edition expands the 11-track album with three CD-only bonus tracks. First comes another dive into the Led Zeppelin catalog with the epic “Kashmir.” The CD then adds two Patriarchs In Black originals – “Dead or Dying” and “This Damn War” – giving CD buyers original PIB material alongside the album's collection of reinterpretations.

That brings this physical CD edition to a substantial 14 tracks, making it an expanded version of Completely Covered in Black rather than simply a different format of the standard album.

Packaged in a jewel case with an 8-page booklet, Completely Covered in Black is simultaneously a covers album, a tribute to decades of musical influence, and another showcase for the unusual collaborative chemistry between Dan Lorenzo and Johnny Kelly.

From Sabbath and KISS to Zeppelin, Motörhead, Queen, Twisted Sister, and Peter Gabriel – plus three CD-only bonus tracks – Completely Covered in Black celebrates the music that helped shape Patriarchs In Black while putting the band's own crushing stamp all over it. NOW SHIPPING!
