Rex Carroll & The Bleed – Take Back A Life (*NEW-CD, 2011, Retroactive Records) Tim Bushong of Lovewar + Whitecross Rex Carroll
ABOUT THE ALBUM
Back in '97 Rex Carroll got together with former Lovewar vocalist Tim Bushong to create The Bleed and released an album called Ouch!. At the coaxing of their label they used silly fake names in their liner notes to purposely obscure the fact that it was them. Unfortunately the poorly marketed album was quickly forgotten and has long been out of print...'til now of course. 15 years later Retroactive Records has yanked this 90's hard rock gem out of the clutches of obscurity and made it widely available! For fans of King's X, Galactic Cowboys, and Ty Tabor.
CUSTOMER REVIEW
1997 was the original recording date when Rugged Records released it as "Ouch" by The Bleed...Rex Carroll (Whitecross) is a guitar legend who provides guitar heroics along with bass and some backing vocals. Tim Bushong (Lovewar) does a great job with lead vocals. Neither this iteration nor the original "Ouch" version gives credits for drums so who knows who drives the beat? Ranging from hard rock to blues to alternative/grunge to lyrical rock, this Christian album is worth a listen, especially since Rex Carroll is on top of his game here. Is Rex Carroll or Phil Keaggy the greatest Christian guitarist ever? Potato/potahto question. I give this album a "4" since Carroll has set the bar high for any recordings featuring his guitar work but I will keep it in regular listening rotation. If only this album had been given some promotional oomph when it was first released and credited to Carroll and Bushong instead of "Nick Nack" and "Odd Job" it might have competed with Creed's "My Own Prison" rather than being banished to the land of obscurity. Thankfully, Retroactive Records has dusted the album off and given it back to music fans.
