ABOUT THE ALBUM
When Sweet Comfort Band released Breakin' The Ice in 1978, they demonstrated that contemporary Christian music could stand comfortably alongside the sophisticated rock, R&B, soul, and jazz-funk being produced by major mainstream artists of the era.
Rather than sounding like a Christian imitation of another band, Sweet Comfort Band developed an identity of their own, built around exceptional musicianship, polished arrangements, rich harmonies, and the expressive, soulful voice of Bryan Duncan.
Duncan handles keyboards and vocals alongside guitarist/vocalist Randy Thomas, bassist Kevin Thomson, and drummer/vocalist Rick Thomson. Together, the quartet created a remarkably polished fusion of rock, pop, soul, R&B, and jazz influences that helped distinguish Sweet Comfort Band from virtually anything else emerging from Christian music in the late 1970s.
A major part of the album’s distinctive sound comes from producer Bob Wilson of the progressive jazz-funk band Seawind. Even more impressive, Breakin' The Ice features the legendary Seawind Horns—Jerry Hey, Kim Hutchcroft, Bill Reichenbach, and Larry Williams—whose unmistakable brass arrangements bring tremendous energy and sophistication to the recording.
The album includes enduring Sweet Comfort Band favorites such as “Got To Believe,” “Melody, Harmony,” and “I Love You With My Life,” alongside the title track, “Good Feelin’,” “Searchin’ For Love,” and more. The combination of Duncan’s soulful vocals, Randy Thomas’ guitar work, the band’s tight rhythm section, and the Seawind Horns gives Breakin' The Ice a musical depth that still sounds impressive decades later.
The production pedigree is equally remarkable. The album was recorded at Martinsound and Maranatha! Studio, with engineering contributions from Jack Joseph Puig, mixed at the legendary Record Plant in Los Angeles, and originally mastered by Ken Perry at Capitol Studios.
CCM Magazine writer Bruce Brown described Breakin' The Ice as one of the most legitimate R&B albums to emerge from Christian music—a reflection of just how unusual and accomplished the record was for its time. Sweet Comfort Band would go on to tour internationally and become one of the defining groups of early contemporary Christian rock.
This limited-edition Retroactive Records reissue has been remastered by J. Powell at Steinhaus and comes packaged in a full-color 4-panel digipak featuring enhanced original artwork.
More than simply an important early Christian rock release, Breakin' The Ice is a first-rate late-’70s blend of rock, soul, R&B, jazz-funk, and melodic AOR performed by musicians operating at an exceptionally high level.
