SWEET COMFORT BAND – CUTTING EDGE: A MELODIC ROCK & AOR CLASSIC!

By 1982, Sweet Comfort Band had completed one of the most interesting musical transformations in early Christian rock. The jazz, soul, funk, and horn-driven elements of their earliest albums had gradually given way to something bigger, sleeker, and considerably more powerful. On Cutting Edge, that transformation is complete.

Originally released in 1982, Cutting Edge finds Sweet Comfort Band operating as a streamlined melodic rock and AOR powerhouse in the tradition of Kansas, Toto, and Styx. The keyboards are prominent, the guitars have more muscle, the production is polished, and the horn section that had played such an important role on earlier albums is no longer a defining element.

What remained was everything that made Sweet Comfort Band exceptional in the first place: tremendous musicianship, sophisticated arrangements, Bryan Duncan's unmistakable voice, Randy Thomas' guitar work, a powerful rhythm section, and hooks, hooks, and more hooks.

BRYAN DUNCAN, RANDY THOMAS & THE SWEET COMFORT BAND SOUND

At the center of Cutting Edge is the extraordinary voice of Bryan Duncan, whose powerful, soulful delivery had already become one of the band's defining characteristics. Duncan also contributes keyboards, helping shape the sophisticated arrangements that give the album its unmistakable early-'80s character.

Guitarist and vocalist Randy Thomas provides a harder rock edge, delivering muscular riffs and melodic guitar work that helped establish the direction of his later recordings with Allies. Bassist Kevin Thomson and drummer/vocalist Rick Thomson complete a rhythm section capable of combining tight musicianship with considerable power.

Together, the quartet delivers a recording that is simultaneously polished, energetic, and unmistakably Sweet Comfort Band. The musicianship remains sophisticated, but the emphasis has shifted toward big choruses, stronger guitar arrangements, and an increasingly confident rock sound.

GUEST VOCALS BY BOB CARLISLE — FUTURE ALLIES FRONTMAN!

One of the album's particularly interesting connections is the appearance of Bob Carlisle on guest vocals. Carlisle would later join Randy Thomas in Allies, one of the most popular melodic Christian rock bands of the 1980s.

Carlisle would also achieve enormous solo success with "Butterfly Kisses," making his contribution to Cutting Edge an appealing piece of history for collectors interested in the musical connections between Sweet Comfort Band, Allies, and the broader contemporary Christian music scene.

The supporting musicians add still more pedigree. Legendary jazz musician Victor Feldman contributes percussion, while John Schreiner provides additional keyboards. Saxophone contributions from David Hlebo and John Phillips add occasional instrumental color without returning the band to the horn-driven arrangements of its earliest recordings.

PRODUCED, RECORDED & MIXED BY JACK JOSEPH PUIG!

The production team behind Cutting Edge is equally impressive. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed by Jack Joseph Puig, who would later become one of the recording industry's most respected Grammy-winning engineers and producers.

Recording sessions took place from July through September 1982 at Bill Schnee Studio and Mama Jo's in North Hollywood. These professional recording environments provided the foundation for the album's powerful, polished sound.

The original recording was mastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab, another legendary figure in the history of professional audio. Sax's mastering credits span an extraordinary range of acclaimed recordings, making his involvement another impressive part of the album's production pedigree.

Together, Puig's production and Sax's original mastering contributed to a recording built around clarity, dynamics, powerful instrumentation, and the polished musical presentation associated with the best early-'80s melodic rock.

FROM "RUNNIN' TO WIN" TO "ARMED AND READY"

"Runnin' To Win" launches the album with precisely the kind of polished, energetic melodic rock that defines Cutting Edge. Driving guitars, prominent keyboards, tight rhythms, and Duncan's commanding vocals establish the album's musical direction immediately.

"Valerie" showcases the band's gift for memorable pop-rock hooks, combining polished arrangements with the melodic sophistication that had become a Sweet Comfort Band trademark.

"Live It" delivers another standout example of the band's increasingly confident, arena-ready sound. Strong guitars, powerful vocals, and a memorable chorus help demonstrate how effectively Sweet Comfort Band had embraced melodic rock without abandoning its musical identity.

Other tracks, including "What Have You Got?," "Falling In Love With You," "Haven't Seen You," "Breakdown Love," "Changed Hearts," "What Did It Mean?," and "Armed And Ready," complete a remarkably consistent ten-song collection.

Throughout the album, big vocals, polished keyboards, driving guitars, and an exceptionally tight rhythm section reveal a band operating with confidence and complete command of its musical direction.

AN IMPORTANT CHAPTER IN CHRISTIAN MELODIC ROCK

Cutting Edge became another important artistic and commercial chapter for Sweet Comfort Band, helping establish the sound that would characterize the final phase of the group's original run.

The album also provides a fascinating bridge to the careers that followed, particularly Bryan Duncan's extensive solo work and Randy Thomas' success with Allies. Listeners familiar with those later recordings will recognize many of the melodic and musical qualities that were already fully developed here.

For fans of classic Christian rock, Cutting Edge stands as an excellent example of how the genre evolved during the early 1980s, embracing sophisticated mainstream production and stronger melodic rock influences without sacrificing the distinctive songwriting and musicianship that made these artists memorable.
