Originally released in 1979, Hold On Tight captures Sweet Comfort Band at a fascinating point in their musical evolution. The jazz-fusion and R&B influences that helped define their earlier work remain, but the band was beginning to move toward the polished melodic rock and pop sound that would become increasingly prominent on subsequent albums.

At the center of it all is Bryan Duncan, whose soulful, instantly recognizable voice soars throughout the record. Duncan is joined by guitarist/vocalist Randy Thomas, bassist Kevin Thomson, and drummer/vocalist Rick Thomson — a lineup capable of moving effortlessly between sophisticated jazz-influenced arrangements, soulful pop, progressive textures, and hook-filled melodic rock.

The result is a collection that retains the adventurous musicianship of the band's early years while moving toward a more accessible, radio-friendly style. The arrangements are still ambitious, the rhythms remain inventive, and the musicianship is exceptionally tight. But there's an increased emphasis on memorable melodies and polished vocal performances.

Produced by Jesus Music veteran Tom Stipe, whose background includes Country Faith and the Richie Furay Band, Hold On Tight benefits from an exceptional supporting cast of musicians with impressive credentials.

Among the most notable contributions are guest backing vocals from Richie Furay, the legendary singer-songwriter whose career includes Buffalo Springfield, Poco, and the Richie Furay Band. Furay's involvement provides a particularly interesting connection between the emerging contemporary Christian rock movement and the celebrated California country-rock scene of the 1960s and 1970s.

Respected percussionist Alex MacDougall, associated with the Phil Keaggy Band, adds another dimension to the recording with his rhythmic contributions.

THE LEGENDARY SEAWIND HORNS RETURN!

The jazz and R&B influences that defined Sweet Comfort Band's early recordings remain evident through the involvement of the legendary Seawind Horns — Jerry Hey, Kim Hutchcroft, Bill Reichenbach, and Larry Williams.

With horn arrangements by Bob Wilson of Seawind, these accomplished musicians bring the kind of sophistication and precision that helped make the band's earlier recordings so distinctive.

The album also benefits from the string arrangements of David Diggs, performed by the LA Super Strings led by Sid Sharp. These contributions give the record an additional orchestral richness without overwhelming the band's rock foundation.

FROM "HOLD ON TIGHT" TO "FIND YOUR WAY"

The musical range is impressive. The title track, "Hold On Tight," delivers an uplifting call to persevere and hold tightly to faith, combining an encouraging message with the band's increasingly melodic approach.

"Carry Me" explores a moodier, more progressive side of Sweet Comfort Band, offering a reminder of the adventurous musical instincts that characterized their earliest releases.

Then there's "Undecided," pure melodic pop ear candy built around an irresistible hook and one of the album's most memorable melodies. It's a particularly strong example of the band's ability to craft accessible pop music without abandoning its sophisticated arrangements or distinctive vocal style.

Songs such as "Take It - Save It," "Falling Star," "You're The One," "Angel," "Chasin' The Wind," and "Don't Tell Me You Love Me" further demonstrate the band's versatility, while "Find Your Way" provides another memorable moment in this eleven-song collection.

Throughout the album, Duncan's expressive vocals and the exceptional interplay of the band members keep everything firmly rooted in the unmistakable Sweet Comfort Band sound.

The production credentials are equally impressive. Hold On Tight was recorded at several notable studios, including the legendary Caribou Ranch in Colorado, Applewood Studios, and Martinsound.

Engineering was handled by Jack Joseph Puig, who would go on to become one of the recording industry's most respected Grammy-winning producers and engineers.

Combined with Tom Stipe's production, Bob Wilson's horn arrangements, David Diggs' string arrangements, and the extraordinary musicians assembled for the sessions, these recording resources helped give Hold On Tight a level of polish and musical depth that continues to distinguish it from many of its contemporaries.

This special 30th Anniversary Edition from Retroactive Records has been remastered by J. Powell at Steinhaus and comes packaged in a beautiful full-color 4-panel digipak featuring enhanced original album artwork.

The edition celebrates an important chapter in Sweet Comfort Band's history — the transition from the adventurous jazz, soul, and fusion influences of their early recordings toward the accessible melodic rock and AOR direction that would help define their later work.
