ABOUT THE ALBUM
Sweet Comfort Band began with a sophisticated blend of R&B, pop, soul, jazz, and funk, but the group never remained musically stationary for long. Album by album, SCB expanded its sound, experimenting with horns and jazz arrangements before gradually embracing bigger guitars, prominent keyboards, and progressive arena rock.
By 1984, that evolution had reached its destination.
Perfect Timing finds Sweet Comfort Band fully embracing the high-energy melodic rock and AOR sound that had been emerging on their previous albums. The polished production, powerful guitars, layered keyboards, huge vocals, and arena-sized hooks put the band comfortably alongside the sophisticated melodic rock of Kansas, Styx, and Toto while retaining the musicianship and distinctive personality that had always separated SCB from the pack.
The band’s classic lineup remained formidable. Bryan Duncan had developed into one of Christian rock’s most recognizable and commanding vocalists. Randy Thomas had emerged as a genuine guitar hero and increasingly accomplished songwriter, while brothers Kevin and Rick Thomson provided the powerful rhythm section that had anchored the band throughout its career.
Perfect Timing also brought Sweet Comfort Band into direct collaboration with the Elefante brothers. Dino Elefante produced, recorded, and mixed the album at Pakaderm Studios, while former Kansas vocalist John Elefante contributed guest vocals. John and Dino also wrote “Sing For The Melody,” strengthening the unmistakable connection between SCB’s increasingly polished arena-rock sound and the melodic progressive rock associated with Kansas.
The title track opens the album with confidence, while “Habit Of Hate” combines a strong melodic hook with the increasingly sophisticated songwriting of Bryan Duncan and John Schreiner. Randy Thomas steps up to the microphone for “Computer Age,” one of the album’s most distinctive rockers, while “Lookin’ For The Answer,” “Envy & Jealousy,” and the powerful “Prodigal’s Regret (Never Should Have Left You)” demonstrate just how far the band had progressed since its ’70s beginnings.
The album also features keyboardists John Schreiner and Peter Robinson, along with additional vocals from John Elefante and Ben Mendoza. Randy Thomas assisted with production, giving Perfect Timing an impressive combination of outside production expertise and the band’s own musical identity.
Perfect Timing would become the final Sweet Comfort Band studio album of the group’s original run. Bryan Duncan went on to an enormously successful solo career, becoming one of contemporary Christian music’s most recognizable voices throughout the following decades. Randy Thomas joined forces with Bob Carlisle to form Allies, carrying SCB’s melodic rock legacy directly into one of the defining Christian rock bands of the late ’80s and early ’90s.
