🎸 About the Album

Volcana – Goddess of Flame

What happens when musicians with serious thrash and traditional heavy metal credentials decide to slow things down, turn up the distortion, and explore the darker, heavier side of their musical influences? In the case of VOLCANA, the result is Goddess of Flame, an eleven-track assault of massive riffs, classic metal melodies, and thunderous doom-laden heaviness.

Released on CD in 2017 through Stormspell Records and its Dark Lore imprint, Goddess of Flame brings together three musicians with impressive backgrounds in underground American heavy metal: Vic Stown of Vindicator, Jeff Potts of Mantic Ritual, Warbringer, and Gygax, and Glen Monturi of Mountain Kings and Seven Witches.

For longtime Vindicator fans, Volcana offers an especially interesting departure. Vic Stown had accumulated musical ideas that didn't quite fit the fast, aggressive thrash metal approach of his other band. Rather than force those ideas into a different style, he developed a separate project where slower tempos, enormous guitar riffs, and classic doom metal influences could take center stage.

The resulting sound draws heavily from the foundations of traditional heavy metal. There's plenty of Black Sabbath in the guitar tones and dark atmosphere, along with the epic weight of Candlemass, the muscular riffing of The Sword, and the classic metal energy of Judas Priest and Riot. Yet Volcana isn't interested in simply reproducing the past. The band delivers its influences with an urgency and rawness that feel alive and immediate.

Guitarist Jeff Potts supplies the soaring lead work and searing solos, while Vic Stown handles the rhythm guitars and vocals. Glen Monturi anchors everything with bass and drums, giving the trio a powerful rhythmic foundation. Together, they create music that moves between crushing, slow-burning passages and energetic traditional heavy metal.

Following the atmospheric opener "The Unwelcomed," the album launches into "Scolopendra (Come Forward)," a driving composition built around heavy guitars and ominous imagery. "Drone" continues the descent into dark, riff-heavy territory, while "Glory or Doom" brings an epic sense of determination and struggle.

The title track, "Goddess of Flame," is one of the album's defining moments, combining imposing guitar riffs with a theme of overwhelming destructive power. From there, songs such as "Merchant Lord," "The Black Mist," and "We Stand" demonstrate the band's ability to balance traditional heavy metal songwriting with doom metal's heavier, darker atmosphere.

There's also room for instrumental atmosphere. "Smoke and Terrors" and the closing "Iniquitous Shores" add another dimension to the album, while "Witch Blade" delivers more of the sharp, aggressive guitar work that gives Volcana its distinctive edge.

The album was produced by Volcana and engineered, mixed, and mastered by Tim Holsinger at Devil's Chord Studio in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The production gives the music a thick, heavy character without sacrificing the clarity of the band's guitar work and arrangements.

What makes Goddess of Flame particularly rewarding is its ability to cross the boundaries between traditional doom and classic heavy metal. The tempos may be slower and the riffs heavier than those of the musicians' other projects, but there's an unmistakable commitment to memorable songs, strong guitar performances, and the spirit of old-school metal.

For collectors who enjoy discovering lesser-known projects involving established underground metal musicians, Volcana is well worth exploring. The combination of Stown's vocals, Potts' lead guitar work, and Monturi's powerful rhythm section gives the band a personality of its own.

For Fans Of: Black Sabbath, Candlemass, The Sword, Trouble, Riot, Judas Priest, and High on Fire. If you enjoy heavy, riff-driven traditional doom with the heart of classic heavy metal, Goddess of Flame belongs on your listening list.
