ABOUT THE ALBUM

Walter Hawkins stands among the defining voices of contemporary gospel music. The brother of Edwin Hawkins, whose “Oh Happy Day” became an international gospel phenomenon, Walter established his own remarkable legacy through his Love Alive recordings, sophisticated arrangements, exceptional choirs, and an unmistakable soulful tenor.

Originally released by Light Records in 1982, I Feel Like Singing captures Hawkins surrounded by an extraordinary collection of gospel talent, including Tramaine Hawkins, Edwin Hawkins, Daryl Coley, Shirley Miller, and Lynette Hawkins-Stephens.

The infectious title track pairs Hawkins with Shirley Miller as they trade lead vocals, while Miller takes center stage on the powerful ballad “He’s Everything.” “Hang On In There” showcases the tightly woven vocal harmonies that became a hallmark of the Hawkins sound.

Tramaine Hawkins delivers a standout performance on “Coming Home,” demonstrating the remarkable soprano voice that would help establish her own celebrated career. “Do Your Best” brings together Lynette Hawkins-Stephens and the unmistakable voice of Daryl Coley, while “Heaven” features both Edwin and Walter Hawkins in a memorable family collaboration.

Throughout I Feel Like Singing, soaring vocals, sophisticated arrangements, soul, and gospel tradition come together in a recording that captures an important era in contemporary gospel music.

This 2013 Retroactive Records edition marked the first time I Feel Like Singing was released on CD. Professionally remastered and limited to only 1,000 copies, the album comes packaged in a full-color 4-panel digipak with liner notes by Stan North of GOSPELflava.com and Gregory Gay.

For collectors of classic gospel and listeners discovering Walter Hawkins’ influential catalog, I Feel Like Singing is an essential recording from one of the genre’s most distinctive voices.
